Background Information
The Landirani Trust is a small NGO based in Malawi and supported from the UK. Our vision is for a healthy, educated and self-sufficient community in Malawi. We work in an area North West of Lilongwe Airport that is 400sq km in size, with 14 centres, and around 3,000 beneficiaries who are orphans and/or vulnerable.
The main activities we deliver are: Promoting educational facilities and access to them for all children in the community Enhancing the ability of the community to become self-sufficient Improving care of orphans and vulnerable people e.g. those affected by extreme poverty, exclusion, HIV/AIDS, disability etc Providing access to clean, safe water and sanitation
We now have a full time vacancy for a Country Manager to work alongside our Operations Manager in our small but committed and enthusiastic team.
Title: Country Manager
Remuneration: The salary and allowances will be appropriate to your experience and within our funding levels.
Primary objectives:
To ensure that projects taken on by Landirani Trust are completed within agreed timescale and budget and to co-ordinate with all parties in Malawi.
- Manage delivery and evaluation of all aspects of the Landirani Trust’s community-based projects in Malawi so that their impact can be well demonstrated, with particular emphasis on health-related activity
- Manage staff and other resources on associated project activities, including staff performance and development
- Have lead responsibility for oversight and management of the development of the Landirani Training Village and its evolving stages and associated staff
- Manage project budgets and monthly/annual accounts and finances in conjunction with the Operations Manager and Finance Officer
- Liaise with partners and Government departments with regard to the successful delivery of all projects
- Represent Landirani at different levels from village Local Based Committee meetings through to Governmental Department meetings
- Support, guide and evaluate volunteers working on specific projects and activities
- Improve the capacity and maintain the motivation of community-based volunteers including those on our Local Based Committees (LBCs) and at Community Based Childcare Centres (CBCCs)
Responsible to: The Landirani Trust Chief Executive based in South West London, UK
Working with: Internal: Landirani Trust UK, Landirani Trust Malawi Trustees, Landirani Trust team members, local and international volunteers, Landirani’s Local Based Committee and field-based volunteers
External: Chiefs, elders and senior people in the community we work in; NGOs and other civil society organisations who are our partners; UK and Malawi Government officials locally and nationally, providers and suppliers; donors and sponsors.
Contract: 2 years minimum
The person:
We are looking for someone with a passion to help raise sustainability in Malawi. You will have the enthusiasm and the ability to work alongside the Malawi communities. You will be willing to learn and understand about their traditional and cultural ways. You will be able to work alongside people of all ages and build a good rapport with the Landirani Malawi team. You will have good delegating skills to maximise the contributions from the people under your responsibility.
We are looking for someone who can combine excellent self-organisation and management skills together with a willingness to be flexible and adaptable.
You need to be honest, open, reliable, resilient and able to deliver in difficult circumstances, You should enjoy working with the widest range of people from a range of backgrounds and environments, where you can add in your own unique ‘added extra’.
This is not a job where the primary rewards are financial or material but instead come from the changes you can support and improvements that you can influence.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
Essential Criteria • Experience of working in a developing country with associated knowledge of rural community development issues • Project management experience including the ability to deliver a range of different and competing tasks and activities • People management experience including excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to use these to encourage and influence colleagues, beneficiaries and partners • Experience of Community Management/NGO Management/Public sector • Resource Management experience including working knowledge of finances • Current IT skills and knowledge including use of Microsoft Office suite or similar (Word, Excel, etc.) • Evidence of self-sufficiency, self-management and resilience in a challenging and unpredictable environment • Fluency in written and spoken Chichewa/English • Current clean driving licence and experience of driving manual and automatic vehicles
Desirable Criteria • Sound knowledge of the challenges facing rural and developing communities in Malawi • Educated to degree level or equivalent • Qualification in International/Community Development or related area(s) • An understanding of Malawi’s culture, traditions and heritage
