The Department of Animal Sciences has been awarded a SARChI Chair in Meat Science: Genomics to Nutriomics.
This position will support and enhance the activities of this Chair. The incumbent will be appointed to a renewable contract until 31 December 2017.
Duties:
- Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in compliance with the general research focus of the SARChI Chair in Meat Science: Genomics to Nutriomics;
- supervision of postgraduate students;
- conducting an active and productive research programme supportive to the SARChI Chair;
- securing of funds to support the research programme;
- continuously publishing research results by means of peer-reviewed articles and conference papers
- performing required administrative tasks;
- involvement in community interaction projects.
Requirements:
Professor:
- A relevant PhD degree in Animal Science with specialisation in Meat Science;
- leader in innovative undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and scientific research;
- a proven research record;
- NRF rating or equivalent;
- sustained research publications and other research outputs of high quality, over several years
- leader of an active and productive research group;
- proven record in supervision of PhD students;
- proven track record in attracting students and external funding;
- independent researcher with significant local and international recognition;
- additional academic, professional, management, teaching and research experience;
- interaction in a leadership role, with relevant industries or external institutions, nationally and internationally.
Associate Professor:
- A relevant PhD degree in Animal Science with specialisation in Meat Science;
- a proven record of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching;
- a proven research record;
- an excellent and sustained record of publications in recognised journals in the field of Meat Science;
- demonstrated ability to obtain research funds;
- a proven track record of successful Doctoral and Master’s supervision.
Senior Lecturer:
- A relevant PhD degree in Animal Science with specialisation in Meat Science;
- A sound base of relevant undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience;
- Evidence of successful postgraduate outputs;
- A growing publication output in the field of Animal Sciences, particularly in Meat Science;
- Proven ability to attract research funds.
Recommendations:
- Knowledge of the livestock industry in South Africa;
- Knowledge of animal behaviour and the interface between animal and public health;
- Computer literacy and specifically good statistical knowledge;
- Ability to speak, read and write Afrikaans as well as English.
