The CSMI was established in 2004 to develop education and training capacity in the multi-disciplinary domain of sustainable development in mining. In parallel, the CSMI was tasked with developing, over time, a fully-fledged research programme for the same area of specialisation.
Currently the CSMI delivers comprehensive education programmes which include servicing two MSc Eng areas of specialisation by a combination of course work and research; a certificate programme for mine inspectors and others responsible for the regulation and governance of health and safety, the environment, and community engagement. In partnership with other universities and institutions, the CSMI also delivers two niched educational offerings, a course on risk management and a certificate programme for community practitioners. A research framework has been established and a number of research projects which are referenced to this framework are underway.
The School of Mining Engineering now wishes to appoint a Director for the CSMI.
Suitably qualified and experienced graduates with a background in one or more of the following areas: mine safety, occupational health, the bio-physical environment and/or community engagement and development are invited to apply.
The Director is expected to be responsible for the CSMI, which is a stand-alone unit within the School of Mining Engineering. The CSMI has a well- established administration team with systems in place for course delivery, standard contracting arrangements for research etc. It also has a network of associates who deliver various elements of the CSMI’s programmes. Course materials are well documented and designed to meet specific learning objectives.
Duties: The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership of the CSMI as well as the following:
- Networking within Wits and with other tertiary and research institutions, both locally and internationally, to maintain the currency of educational and research outputs of the CSMI.
- Promotion of good practice in all of the sustainable development disciplines.
- Lead the fund raising efforts of the CSMI and ensure the financial viability of the CSMI.
- Interact with key stakeholders in South Africa and on the continent to ensure that the programmes and activities of the Centre are aligned with their needs.
- Oversee the contractual arrangements pertaining to the CSMI’s activities.
- Oversee and participate in the research programme of the Centre.
- Oversee and participate in the teaching programme of the Centre.
Remuneration: This is a grant-funded position and a competitive package, dependant on qualifications and experience, will be offered.
