Organization Settings

Responsibilities;
Under the direct supervision of a Security Sergeant and overall supervision of the Chief, Security & Safety Section. The incumbent shall:
Provide security coverage of entry points throughout the United Nations system to prevent entry to unauthorized person and the unauthorized removal of UN property;
Screen all personnel, packages and vehicles entering the premises including clearance through metal detectors; checks packages both visually and by use of x-ray equipment; identifies and retains custody of weapons entering the premises with the authority to either identifies and retains custody of weapons entering the premise s with the authority to either confiscate or return said weapons upon owners' exist from the premises;
Conduct exterior, log base, and watch-tour patrols throughout the Headquarters district and annex buildings for the purpose of intercepting unauthorized persons attempting to have gained entry to the premises, reporting all security, fire and safety violations to the Security Control Centre;
Provide information and direction to all persons associated with the organization; Control, identify and clear pedestrian and vehicular traffic entering and exiting the premises; maintains log books and records as required;
Maintain alertness for any potential or actual breaches of security and any disturbances or unusual activity; and report these immediately; Ensure that all UN property being carried from the complex is checked for appropriate documentation;
Provide appropriate and timely assistance to UN staff as and when required; perform all other related duties as assigned. Professionalism: Demonstrated sound judgment in applying technical expertise and excellent knowledge of Security policies, procedures and practices.

Operates/functions in compliance with service rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Takes ownership of all responsibilities and actions.
Technology Awareness:
Working knowledge of computer hardware and software programs applicable to the service.
Client Orientation:
Professional and courteous attitude and demonstrated ability to work effectively in a stressful environment. Understands that those provided service are clients and seeks to see things from a client perspective.
Communications:
Ability to communicate effectively and provide information in English and Swahili whenever necessary. Ability to draft documents in concise English and maintains a high sense of confidentiality.
Teamwork:
Places the agenda of the service before personal agenda. Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals.
Judgment and Decision Making:
Demonstrated sound judgment in resolving operational issues/problems.
Qualifications
Completion of secondary education and a demonstrated and direct kind of security knowledge and skill. Training in a recognized Military or Police academy. Candidate will be required to sit and successfully pass the United Nations Security Officer Test. Candidate must possess a valid driving license.
Experience
A minimum of three years of security related direct experience in either a police or military service.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR).For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French is an asset.
Other Desirable skills
Basic supervisory experience is considered as an asset in case the security Sergeant is absent. Computer skills are essential (ability to use Word, Excel, E-mail). Authorized weapon certification is necessary. Demonstrated knowledge in protection, investigations, searches and mine clearance, threat and risk assessment, and surveillance systems will be considered an asset.
On-the-job practical training to provide the officer with the specific United Nations security practices, procedures, and methods.First aid certification is an asset. Close Protection experience is an asset.
