The International Service for Human Rights, a leading international NGO, is seeking an accountant. He or she will be responsible for the financial management, monitoring and administration of ISHR. ISHR is an independent, non-profit organization with offices in Geneva and New York. Our work aims to support human rights defenders, strengthen human rights systems and lead coalitions for human rights change.
Key responsibilities
• Budget: In conjunction with the Director and Managers, you will prepare, monitor and report against annual organizational and project-based budgets. • Financial reports and projections: You will prepare monthly financial statements and projections for the Director and quarterly reports for the Board. • Payments and expenditures: You will ensure that all payments and expenditures are properly authorised and allocated, and accurately effected and entered. • Grant and contract management: In conjunction with Managers, you will ensure effective grant management, including preparing invoices, maintaining accurate financial records, and preparing financial reports and acquittals for donors in accordance with contractual requirements. • Audit: In conjunction with the Director and independent auditors, you will oversee the annual audit process. • Banking: You will manage ISHR’s bank accounts and prepare monthly reconciliations • Payroll, taxes, social charges and petty cash: You will administer the payroll and be responsible for taxes, social charges and petty cash. • Financial policies and systems: In conjunction with the Director, you will ensure that ISHR’s financial policies and systems are accurate, reliable, robust, safe, efficient and effective. • Other: You will also undertake such other tasks as are necessary for the effective operation of a lean NGO.
Qualifications and experience
It is highly desirable that the successful applicant has or can demonstrate:
• A degree, commercial diploma or equivalent in accounting and bookkeeping • At least 5 years’ professional experience, preferably including experience working with NGOs and project-based accounting • Fluency in English and French • A commitment to human rights and to working in a way that is collaborative and flexible • Ability to work effectively and responsively under pressure and to work effectively in a small, dynamic team

This is currently a full-time position but part-time arrangements may be considered.
