The U.S. Mission Addis Ababa is seeking an individual for the position of Translator/Interpreter in the Public Affairs Section of the Embassy.
BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION
The incumbent serves as the translator/interpreter for the Public Affairs Section of Embassy Addis Ababa with primary responsibility for the translation of official USG documents, speeches, press releases, and reports between English and Amharic and interpretation for Embassy Public Affairs events. Incumbent will also provide occasional interpretation for the Executive Office and visiting USG principals with Ethiopian interlocutors.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
NOTE: All applicants must address each selection criterion detailed below with specific and comprehensive information supporting each item. 1. Required Education: Bachelor’s Degree in the Social Sciences, English literature or Communications is required.
2. Required Experience: A minimum of three years of experience in translation, interpretation, or language teaching involving English language is required.
3. Language Requirement: Level 4 (Fluent) Speaking/Reading of English and Amharic is required. (English language proficiency will be tested)
4. Other Skills: Incumbent must have good understanding of specialized terminology in both English and Amharic related to all topics of interest; Ethiopian foreign policy and social conditions and have a solid grasp of U.S. society and politics; diplomatic protocol and ability to understand and interpret nuances in speeches and written texts; must be cognizant of cultural norms and sensitivities, both Ethiopian and American; ability to deal effectively and professionally with all levels of persons both inside and outside of the U.S. mission, ranging from VIPs to rural populations; ability to speak in public, including at adequate volume in large venues and computer knowledge, such as word processing and e-mail are required.
5. Interpersonal Skill Requirements: Ability to work harmoniously with co-workers and embassy personnel and the public is required.
SELECTION PROCESS
When equally qualified, US Citizen Eligible Family Members (AEFM) and U.S. Veterans will be given preference. Therefore, it is essential that the candidate address the required qualifications above in the application.

1. Management will consider nepotism/conflict of interest, budget, and residency status in determining successful candidacy.
2. Current employees serving a probationary period are not eligible to apply.
3. Currently employed US Citizen EFMs who hold a FMA appointment are ineligible to apply for advertised positions within the first 90 calendar days of their employment.
4. Currently employed NORs hired under a Personal Services Agreement (PSA) are ineligible to apply for advertised positions within the first 90 calendar days of their employment, unless currently hired into a position with a When Actually Employed (WAE) work schedule.
