The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.
The Malaria Programme is seeking to recruit an experienced Scientific Programme Manager. This is a senior position in the management of the Malaria Genomic Epidemiology Network in partnership with the Sanger Institute. You will take a central role supporting the Principal Investigator and other senior management in the strategic development and delivery of the MalariaGEN programme. You will manage and optimize pre-sequencing pipelines within the Malaria Genetics group at Sanger and lead the integration of sequencing operations with MalariaGEN's other major initiatives (informatics, analysis and capacity building), requiring collaboration with both strategy and implementation. You will establish and maintain international research partnerships and lead activities to enhance the visibility, leadership, and impact of MalariaGEN in the research community. You will liaise closely with Sanger faculty, core sequencing activities and central administration, team members across sites, and research partners around the world.
You will have the demonstrated ability to manage diverse areas of scientific, operational, and administrative activities simultaneously. You will be educated to the doctoral level in biological sciences and have substantial project and personnel management experience. You have demonstrable experience in large scale genome science, in working with multiple scientific collaborators of diverse research and resource backgrounds, and in setting and delivering on expectations to achieve mutual and independent project goals. You will exhibit the leadership qualities required to manage and support your lab and administrative team and have the ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with senior academic, clinical, research and support staff. A positive, driven and flexible attitude is important, and you should have the confidence to work through problems independently or with the support of the management team as appropriate.
Essential Skills
- PhD and significant postdoctoral experience working in a biomedical research environment
- Strong understanding and established reputation in the field of genomic epidemiology of malaria (ie publications, representation and/or presentation at international meetings), and the ability to quickly develop a working knowledge collaborators' scientific interests, drivers in this area
- Strong technical understanding of all aspects of the Illumina sequencing pipeline and data outputs
- Proficient in planning and coordinating complex collaborative projects with multiple international partners
- Strong appreciation of issues surrounding open access data release, data sharing, intellectual property, and authorship
- Evidence of good understanding of issues surrounding working in large scale international research consortia including partners from the developing world
- Strong appreciation of issues surrounding research capacity building in the developing world, and experience supporting research capacity building initiatives
- Proven ability to influence and persuade at a senior level
- Proven experience interacting with funding agencies
- Proven experience of writing and presenting science and scientific strategy
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal and diplomacy skills
- Demonstrated confident and accomplished communicator, oral and written
