The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) is an independent, non-profit applied policy research organisation with a focus on human security in Africa. AFRICAN CONFLICT PREVENTION PROGRAMME - PRETORIA
Programme Head
The African Conflict Prevention Programme in Pretoria (ACPP-PTA) is part of the ISS’s African Conflict Prevention System (ACPS) that seeks to provide continental conflict analysis and early warning to compliment the early warning mechanisms of the African Union. The ACPS currently runs from Pretoria, Nairobi and Addis Ababa, with plans for a further hub in the ISS’s newest office in Dakar. ACPP-PTA is particularly known for its daily morning briefings and briefing notes which provide real-time analysis of developments in Africa in relation to conflict and threats to human security.
The Programme Head of the ACPP-PTA will report to the Pretoria Office Director and will be responsible for all aspects of programme management including: fund-raising and donor liaison, financial management, delivery of project outputs, staff management, quality control over the training, research and policy products of the programme, monitoring and evaluation and external engagement. S/he also operates as a member of the Senior Management Team of the ISS, and will contribute towards the strategic development of the Institute.
The successful candidate will be experienced in conflict analysis and have a sound understanding of African security and governance challenges. S/he will have an extensive knowledge of conflict issues in Africa, an effective network across the continent (particularly at the AU and at regional level), a strong record of publications and policy work and in fund-raising.
Requirements:
§ The successful candidate will be a senior person with proven professional competence, with a minimum of a Masters degree in international relations, African politics, or other relevant field
§ At least 10 years relevant work experience within a policy, politics, research or professional environment with increasing management responsibilities
§ At least five years of management experience
§ Excellent financial management and human resource management skills
§ Excellent research and writing skills, a record of relevant publications
§ Strong track record in fund-raising and donor liaison
§ A strong team leader with excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in cooperation with governments and civil society
§ Experience in providing direct policy support to governments
§ Excellent English language skills, both written and verbal
§ Fluency in French and/or Portuguese will be an advantage
§ Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines
§ Willingness to travel extensively regionally and internationally
Salary: Salary commensurate with ISS internal salary structure.
