BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee is one of the world’s largest humanitarian agencies. IRC provides relief, rehabilitation and post-conflict reconstruction support to victims of oppression and violent conflict in 42 countries. Southern Sudan is emerging from over two decades of brutal civil war, a conflict rooted in disputes over religion, ethnicity, resources, governance and self-determination. The 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement ushered in an era of post-conflict development efforts; however, the security situation remains fragile and testing operational challenges abound.
SCOPE OF WORK: The New School Communications Volunteer will support the IRC Southern Sudan country program by improving, systematizing and maintaining a range of communications activities. The position reports to the Grants Coordinator under the direction of the Senior Management Team.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Strategic • Outline a Communications Strategy for IRC Southern Sudan, including internal and external elements tailored to selected audiences; Internal Information-sharing within IRC Southern Sudan • Produce a monthly nationwide newsletter (and/or other tools such as posters) to update staff on progress of programs, new programs, new and departing staff, messages from HQ and other key information; • Organize soft and hard “libraries” of topical (technical, managerial, organizational) resources accessible to all field sites; • Compile and regularly update an information package for incoming staff; Informational materials about IRC Southern Sudan for other IRC offices (HQ, Region) • Update the IRC Southern Sudan Country Fact Sheet on a quarterly basis; • Provide regular updates to internet-based communications (features, blogs, tweets, etc.) • Produce content regarding IRC Southern Sudan for reports, including annual reports; • Prepare responses to information requests from HQ, for example, collating SS responses to HQ-generated surveys of country offices. External communication and visibility materials Materials for external use shall be prepared in cooperation with the Regional Media Manager. • Prepare sector specific program overviews that feed into a single comprehensive IRC Southern Sudan Program Brief; • Work with technical teams to document program success stores and lessons-learned reports; • Design and organize production, distribution and update of ‘publicity’ materials (such as leaflets, calendars, T-shirts, etc.) in English and local languages to raise awareness of IRC and its work; • Take photos that communicate IRC’s work in Southern Sudan Additional communications tasks • Contribute to the editing of proposals and reports for submission to donors; • Take, edit and circulate minutes and reports of meetings, conferences, trainings, etc.
REQUIREMENTS • Coursework in communications subjects. Degree in related field. • Excellent writing skills • English fluency • Experience in writing for a range of audiences (general public, funding entities, academic, etc.) • Excellent working knowledge of computer software packages – MS Word, Excel and email applications essential • Ability to work well in a cross-cultural team environment, as well as ability to be a self-starter and work independently.
SECURITY and HOUSING : Security: The security level is yellow. Major concerns are common criminality, presence of armed troops, tribal violence. Housing: The position is based in Juba. Lodging is a private bedroom in a shared IRC guest house – with electricity, internet and cable TV. Food is the individual’s responsibility. There may be occasional trips to field sites.
