The mission of the Gates Foundation's Global Health Program (GHP) is to help ensure that lifesaving advances in health are created and shared with those who need them most. To date, we have committed nearly $10 billion in global health grants to organizations worldwide. The focus of our grants is to:
*Discover new insights to fight serious diseases and other health problems affecting developing countries.
*Develop effective and affordable vaccines, medicines, and other health tools.
*Deliver proven health solutions in developing countries.
*Advocate for more and better resources and policies to support the introduction and uptake of new and existing health technologies.
The TB Strategic Program Team (SPT) manages the third largest portfolio in the GH program with a budget of approximately 120 million dollars per year and is responsible for the development and delivery of products and services for TB, a disease that kills someone every 16 seconds. The TB SPT resides within the HIV & Tuberculosis Division. The HIV and Tuberculosis division is recruiting a new leader for the TB SPT who would also be a Deputy Director (DD) of the Division. The TB DD will work closely with the Director of HIV and Tuberculosis and other team members to drive the foundation's strategy and engagement in the global TB arena. The DD will be a key member of the Division's leadership, the leader and manager of the TB team, and an active partner on the Global Health Leadership Team. The DD will be the external voice for the foundation on tuberculosis while leading the TB team's strategic vision and supporting Program Officers in achieving program goals. Strategic Program Team Leadership:
* Provide leadership and guidance to the small elite TB team.
* Responsible for the implementation, efficient execution and ongoing evaluation of approved TB strategic objectives that encompass product development and delivery.
* In concert with other team members to conceptualize and articulate future strategies to senior leadership for approval.
* Oversee shaping and execution of TB grant portfolio; create robust systems that ensure quality grantee interactions, efficient portfolio management and effective annual planning.
* Ensure systems to track progress and accountability.
* Contribute to integration of strategies and execution plans across GH teams, such as those focused on product related discovery and delivery.Product development:
* Maintain sufficient grantee interaction so as to ensure vaccine, drug and diagnostic portfolios are advanced in a strategic and cost efficient manner.
* Provide rigorous reviews that incorporate internal & external stakeholders and anticipate mid-course corrections, project impact and propose appropriate changes.
* Establish and maintain relationships with the broad range of stakeholders involved in TB product development and delivery.Change Agent Functions:
* Oversee global and country specific activities so as to ensure the prompt uptake of products and programs.
* Identify & cultivate partners to build coalitions and achieve objectives.
* Manage partnerships to achieve impact. For example, conduct site visits, convene meetings of key stakeholders, monitor and evaluate components of grants.
* Serve as partner and resource to grantees to achieve strategic objectives.
* Attend meetings to represent the foundation and shape global, regional and country TB agendas around in line with TB strategy.
* Search for opportunities to disseminate knowledge and partner products to leverage and expand their influence.
* Be a leader in global health in integrating and coordinating activities with other SPTs
We are looking for an expert in product development management, preferably in infectious diseases, with scientific, management and strategic planning skills, and a track record of success. Experience working with the private sector is strongly preferred, as is experience in vaccine development and deep knowledge of tuberculosis. The ideal candidate will have worked in multiple settings giving him/her an appreciation for the complexities of implementing product development programs and translating research findings into effective programs.
The candidate should have:
* An MD or PhD in an infectious disease related field.
* A minimum of 10-15 years experience
* Demonstrated experience with team management and leading cross-functional teams.
* Proven ability to lead and influence data-driven strategy planning and implementation.
* Understanding of product launch or infectious disease control in target geographies (China, India, South Africa and Brazil) preferred.
* Some understanding of the realities and complexities of delivering health programs in developing countries.
* Administration and fiduciary responsibility.
* Demonstrated excellence in scientific writing and data analysis, written and oral communication skills, and experience advocating and communicating with a broad and diverse audience.
* Experience in a role requiring collaboration in a complex internal and external environments.
* Demonstrated ability to work with efficiency, diplomacy, and flexibility particularly as part of a team effort. Experience in managing teams with diverse cultural and professional backgrounds. Able to manage people as well as projects
* Ability to travel up to 30% domestically and internationally.
* Passionate commitment to the mission of the foundation, healthy insight into his/her own strengths and weaknesses and a well developed sense of humor.
