The East African Health Research Commission (EAHRC) is an Institution of the East African Community (EAC) established by the 5th Extra-Ordinary Summit of the EAC Heads of State on 18th June 2007. The EAHRC has been established as a mechanism for making available to the community, advice upon all matters of health and health related research and findings necessary for knowledge generation, technological development, policy formulations, practices and related matters. The vision of the Commission is high quality research for improvement of the health and well-being of the people of the community; its mission is to coordinate and promote the conduct of health research; to source, gather and disseminate the findings for the purpose of policy formulations.
The EAHRC is looking for highly motivated and result-driven professionals who are citizens of East African Community Partner States (Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda) to apply for the following short term positions tenable at East African Health Research Commission.

Job reports to: Deputy Executive Secretary - Research
Job Purpose:
The incumbent will be responsible for supporting the East African Health Research Commission in implementing activities planned for the last quarter of the financial year 2015-2016. The bulk of the activities are focused on preparations for the upcoming EAC Health and Scientific Conference, the establishment of the EAHRC Medical Journal as well as the finalization of the EAHRC strategic plan. The position requires frequent communication and interaction with all stakeholders of the Commission.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Deputy Executive Secretary – Research, the Principal Health Officer shall perform the following functions:-
- Liaise with the Deputy Executive Secretary (Research) and other staff of the Commission to implement activities included in specific ToRs that will be agreed upon and put in the contract that will be signed before starting the job.
- Report weekly on progress of the implementation of activities included in the specific ToRs of the period
- Perform any other relevant duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Deputy Executive Secretary (Research) and directly related to the ToRs set up for the period of contract.
Qualifications and Experience:
Academic and Professional Qualifications
- A Master’s degree in Health Sciences
- A post graduate qualification in health research will be an added advantage
- Having published at least two (2) articles in international peer review journals,
- with at least one (1) article as the first or lead author.
Working Experience
- Relevant working experience of at least five (5) years in health research or related fields
- Experience in organizing scientific conferences
Skills and Competencies:
Competencies
- Ability to develop integrated results oriented action plans (setting objectives, developing strategies, budgeting and organizing the functions necessary to accomplish the activities);
- Should have extensive and demonstrable knowledge of health research, health systems and the translation of results of health research into health policy and practice;
- Demonstrable competency in public health systems development, management and institution building at national, regional and/or international level;
- Proficiency in ICT;
- Should be fluent in the English language;
- Ability to work under pressure and to deliver on the set deadlines.

Education Qualifications and Relevant Working Experience:
Education Qualifications
All candidates applying must have qualifications that are recognized by the relevant national accreditation body in their respective countries. This condition is applicable for locally and internationally attained qualifications.
All professions that require registration with the specific professional bodies will be expected to do so in compliance with the requirements of their respective Partner States.
Relevant Working Experience
Internship, training, apprenticeship and clerkship will not be considered as relevant work experience.
Terms and Conditions of Service:
The successful candidate shall hold office for a short term contract of 02 months running from April to 31st May 2016.
