Assignment:
The media and public interest in the CTBT, the CTBTO and its verification regime has increased many fold over the last several years. This coincides with the near completion of the verification regime and its operational readiness as it was demonstrated by the successful detection in 2006, 2009 and 2013 of the nuclear tests conducted by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the triple disaster in Japan in March 2011, and the need to complete the verification regime and achieve universality of the Treaty. In 2013 - 2014, a specific focus of promotional and public information work lies IFE14.
In this environment, it is deemed necessary that the PTS continues to rely on video-audio and multimedia production to raise awareness of and promote the CTBT verification regime. Video - audio and multimedia have proven to be one of the most important and instrumental ways to raise awareness and understanding of technical and scientific issues in connection with the International Monitoring System, the International Data Centre and On-Site inspections. Video-audio and multimedia production leads to increased and better media coverage of the CTBT and its verification regime in broadcast media worldwide as well as in social media, and as a consequence, increase awareness of the purpose of the CTBT and the mission of the CTBTO among decision makers, civil society and the general public. As an additional, equally important, objective, the video/audio material produced, including as clean feed (i.e., the raw footage), will also serve and be used for purposes such as training, capacity building, e-learning and archival/historical documentation.Under the supervision of the Chief, Public Information, in close collaboration with the Public Information team, and in consultation with the technical and other divisions, the consultant will produce video/audio materials particularly suitable and accessible to the broadcast media worldwide and/or to the target groups of IFE14 and other aspects of the verification regime. Special effort will be made to create materials so that media in different regions, including remaining Annex 2 countries and developing countries, can be targeted in a suitable way so as to promote entry into force and the completion of the verification regime and the success of IFE14.
Duties:
- Produce video and audio packages including scripts and story boards for broadcasting media worldwide, for the CTBTO Youtube channel and for the web. Both news and feature stories will be produced, including on capacity building, IMS station building/maintenance, operations, data processing and analysis, ops centre, GCI, on-site inspections and specific features related to IFE14. Travel to the field will be conducted to this end in close cooperation with the technical divisions;
- Promote video-audio materials with news media worldwide through AP, Reuters, UNifeed and UNTV, supervise the placements of video clips on public website, social media sites etc, and promote the video-audio production in appropriate fora;
- Other assignments as applied including writing assignments for web, social media and publicationS.
Qualifications:
Masters degree in journalism, public information, social sciences, the humanities, the sciences or any other relevant field plus at least ten years of relevant experience with regards to media and publicity outreach and multimedia production, including products for TV and radio, from the perspective of an international organization as well as from a scientific and technical organization. In addition, the consultant will have excellent writing and editing skills, preferably acquired as a journalist or as a press officer. Excellent command of both written and spoken English. Knowledge of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, its verification regime and the work of the CTBTO Preparatory Commission will be an important advantage. The consultant will be computer literate.

Conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results and be able to work independently with minimum supervision. Very good skills in communicating with people from different backgrounds and demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural environment.
