ActionAid is an international organisation, working with over 25 million people in more than 40 countries for a world free from poverty and injustice. It has been pioneering amongst many international organisations by developing a governance model built on key principles of equality, interdependence, subsidiarity and accountability. Currently ActionAid has 25 members, predominantly in the Global South, with the rest of our country programmes on track to becoming full affiliates in the coming years.
The purpose of this role is to provide strategic leadership in governance within our federal context; enabling capacity building in line with our unique governance model and governance support to members and country programmes.
ActionAid International is seeking an experienced Governance specialist to work together with the Senior Leadership Team to craft and implement an international Governance capacity building strategy, working closely with Federation Members and the Governance & Board Development Committee of the International Board. This senior leader will work closely with Chief Executive and AA leadership in processes and standards of Governance across ActionAid International.
This position will also implement and maintain high standards for governance in the organization as well as monitor and continually strengthen the technical aspects of agreements between ActionAid International and its Members.
The head of this unit will be responsible for the attraction, retention and development of a small international team of Governance advisors to establish global standards, best practices and supporting systems and resources.
Desired Skills & Experience Formally, you should have a post-graduate degree in governance or a related field. Experience at a mid-senior management level and work experience of 10-15 years is required in this role. A Legal/Paralegal qualification is desirable.
We require a senior Governance specialist, who has worked in a global context and experience in the International NGO sector. This will be coupled with experience in institutional governance with a strong focus on capacity building of Governance Advisors and Governance Focal Persons. The key competencies are deep experience in NGO/corporate governance, institutional capacity building, management and leadership.
You must be able to demonstrate thought leadership in the areas mentioned above and be able to introduce and implement innovative ideas and practices globally using a consultative approach. The Governance specialist will provide leadership and coaching support to our senior leaders, many of whom will be Country Directors and Heads of International Functions. Your ability to build strong relationships, trust and capacity building will be critical in this role. You will also act as the chief governance advisor to the Chief Executive and Senior Leadership Team.
At a personal level, you must have a strong commitment to a human rights based approach to development; champion women's rights and value working with diverse cultures and the poor and marginalised groups. Your ability and willingness to travel internationally and work flexibly in virtual settings and distant management would be required.
