Position: Ni Nyampinga Magazine Creative Editor
What is Ni Nyampinga?
Ni Nyampinga is Rwanda’s first teen brand, a brand that is grounded in the past and informing the future.
Ni Nyampinga currently consists of a free bi-monthly youth magazine and a weekly radio show. Ni Nyampinga inspires and equips Rwandan girls to be informed decision makers.
Overview
We are looking for an experienced Creative Editor, to take the reigns and lead on Ni Nyampinga. They right candidate will be required to work with the current Creative Editor and will then take full responsibility after 6 months.
They will be involved in all stages of the magazine production, they will work closely with the current Creative Editor at large, girl journalists and all creative consultants involved in the magazine’s creation.
The Creative Editor will lead, coordinate and mentor Ni Nyampinga teen girl reporters. A willingness and ability to work through a sometimes messy and unpredictable creative process is required.
They will review all first drafts of everything submitted to the magazine and communicate feedback to the current Creative Editor. An eye for detail and accuracy, as well as exceptional creativity is important.
Ni Nyampinga Creative Editor must have the interest of our teenage girl audience at the heart of every creative decision. They must ensure that the magazine’s editorial strategy, content and design resonates with the girl to whom we are trying to communicate.
Key Responsibilities
Reports to: Ni Nyampinga Creative Editor and Girl Hub Associate Brand Manager
- Ni Nyampinga Magazine’s concept development is largely driven by research and key insights from Rwandan girls.
- The Creative Editor will collaborate with researchers and insight gatherers to determine the magazine’s theme, content strategy, story ideas and general concept.
- They will lead the magazine’s creative production process and work with Ni Nyampinga girl journalists, young photographers, hired consultants and the creative agency to bring to life both the editorial and visual concepts of each issue.
- They will ensure that all magazine copy is fully proofed and translated before sign off.
- They will identify experienced writers and photographers to contribute to the magazine. Setting deadlines and ensuring that these deadlines are adhered to.
- The Creative Editor will work with the creative design team to make sure that the magazine is on brief and resonates with the target audience.
- The Creative Editor will liaise with Girl Hub and Ni Nyampinga multiple stake holders, some of which include the grant holders, creative agencies, individual consultants and girl journalists to amplify the voice of Rwandan girls.
- The Creative Editor will work with the Girl hub’s public relations team and the global strategic communications team to ensure that the voice of Rwandan girls is amplified and that the right stories are shared to a larger audience in both country and global platforms.
Qualifications and Experience
- Should be ready to initiate creative discussion and able to articulate fresh concepts and ideas that will improve on how we deliver for girl.
- Ability to manage, lead and mentor young reporters is key to this role.
- Should have knowledge on teen culture and must have a keen interest in learning everything about Rwandan teenage girl cultural norms.
- Should have previously worked in the creative arts and, or publishing industry.
- Should be aware and sensitive to Rwandan traditions and cultural norms
- Ability to communicate in both English and Kinyarwanda is important.
- Should be remarkably intuitive, with creative excellence.
- Be willing to take active interest in the local arts and creative scene, both in Kigali and the provinces.
