The Faculty of Law, University of Oslo, announces a position for a PhD student attached to the Resource Group in Natural Resources Law. The group's activities are multidisciplinary and cover research in international, European and national law on natural resources, energy, the environment and property, including law and economics.
The PhD position is included in the project ”Preventing environmental effects of products through producer responsibility”. This is a new project funded by The Research Council of Norway, with start up in the autumn 2011.
The project aims to get new insight and build general academic competence in the increasingly important field of producers’ and importers’ responsibility for the environmental effects of their products. This is a wide research field internationally within both environmental law and trade law, as well as environmental economics. The project will have a broad perspective and develop close links with international research in the field. The project has formal international partners at four European universities.
To a large extent, and increasingly, national and global pollution problems are caused by “diffuse pollution”: pollution from a range of ‘daily life’ activities and consumption. One important cause of ‘diffuse pollution’ is the mass production and consumption of products with negative environmental effects during use and/or when they are disposed of as waste.
The topic raises issues of both national, European and international environmental and trade law. It aims to describe, clarify and analyze national and international rules in this regard, and the interface between them. It also intends to identify problems and weaknesses in the legal regime as a basis for improvements.
The Natural Resources Law Group runs several projects that are connected to the project, in particular the project “Consistency in Environmental Law” which is also funded by the Research Council of Norway.

The selected candidate will automatically be admitted to the faculty's approved PhD program.
Requirements
- Applicants must hold a Norwegian Master’s degree in Law or equivalent. The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.
- The candidate's grades, the project description, and the applicant's personal qualifications will be taken into consideration in the evaluation of the applications.
- A final project plan will eventually be developed in close cooperation with the chair of the Natural Resources Law Group Hans Chr. Bugge and other members of the group.
- Some knowledge of law-and-economics/environmental economics is desirable.

Evaluation of the application
When evaluating the application, emphasis will be given to the project description and the applicant’s academic and personal prerequisites to carry out the project. Applicants may be called for an interview.

- A letter of application
- Detailed project proposal (5 - 10 pages)
- Curriculum vitae with documentation of education and, if any, former positions and academic work.
- Certified copies of certificates and diplomas must be provided in the original language as well as in English or a Scandinavian translation.
- List of publications and academic work that the applicant wishes to be considered by the evaluation committee
- Scholarly publications. If the publications are written by more than one author, a declaration of authorship and the contribution of the applicant should be submitted.
