Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Trial Section, Office of the Prosecutor.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision and direction of the Principal Legal Officer, the Legal Officer gives legal advice and direction to the Trial and Appeals teams by: reviewing pleadings, judgements and decisions of the Tribunal to identify legal positions on trial issues pending before the Chambers formulating and advising the Trial teams on legal positions in relation to ongoing trials; undertaking comprehensive research on principles and application of international humanitarian law at the international and national level as well as undertaking comprehensive research in comparative criminal law in national jurisdictions, which could involve research into legal systems of either civil law or common law countries; drafting memoranda or court pleadings as necessary.
The incumbent, when needed in individual cases, represents the Prosecutor before the Judges and Chambers by: preparing written pleadings or advising on written pleadings to be filed on behalf of the Prosecutor before the Trial and Appeals Chambers; Assist the Principal Legal Officer or Senior Trial Attorney in the preparation or presentation of oral arguments in court on specific issues.
The Legal officer performs other functions, as assigned namely: participating in the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) internal case reviews, drafting and revisions, as well as participating in regular briefing and planning conferences with other members of the OTP; Providing legal and policy advice concerning particular trial cases or appeals to the Principal Legal Director, or if required to the Deputy Prosecutor and Prosecutor.

Proficiency in legal writing and expression and ability to prepare a variety of legal instruments and documents. Discretion and sound judgement in applying expertise to sensitive, complex issues. Education
University degree in law and admission to practice law in national jurisdiction. An advanced degree in law (or equivalent) with specialization in criminal law, either substantive or procedural or public international law is desirable.
Work Experience
Minimum of 7 years professional experience in legal practice both within national jurisdiction and in international law and/or criminal law.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the Tribunal. Fluency in written and spoken English and/or knowledge of the other is essential.
Assessment Method
There will be a technical test and competency-based interview.
Special Notice
The appointment is limited to ICTY. Appointment of the successful candidate on this position will be limited to the initial funding of the post. Extension of the appointment is subject to the extension of the mandate and/or the availability of funds. As the international tribunals are not integrated in the Secretariat, UN Staff Members serve on assignment or secondment from their parent department/office if selected. Appointments of staff members in the United Nations are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General. Staff Members are expected to move periodically to new functions in accordance with established rules and procedures, and may in this context be reassigned by the Secretary-General throughout the Organization based on the changing needs and mandates.
