Data Manager (Programmer)

reporting to the Head of Data Centre
The Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) is a not-for-profit organization whose main objective is to improve the quality of life and health of people suffering from neglected diseases by using an alternative model to develop drugs for these diseases. DNDi, in collaboration with KEMRI and other Institutions in Africa is currently conducting a multi-country and multi-centre clinical trial on Leishmaniasis (Kala-azar). The Data Management Section of the DNDi/KEMRI multi-country and multi-centre collaboration in Nairobi is seeking to recruit a suitable candidate to fill the following vacant position.
I. Principal qualifications/skills:
Essential Skills:
- Bachelors degree or higher diploma in Computer Science / IT / ICT or related discipline
- At least 3 years experience in managing large amounts of data, including writing programs
- Advanced IT skills and working knowledge and proven experience of IT systems and programming in some language or software package
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Ms Access
Desirable Skills:
- Advanced knowledge of a statistical analysis package such as STATA.
- Experience working in clinical research with an understanding of GCP principles
- Experience of OpenClinica and/or Electronic Data Capture (EDC)
- Experience in training/mentoring other programmers/data managers
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
II. Overall purpose of the job:
- Ensure effective operation of the data management functions through the development, review and oversight of standard operating procedures (SOPs),
- Develop study specific data management plans, and design, validate and maintain clinical trial databases.
- To work with appropriate project staff, to ensure that efficient and reliable data management systems are in place in DNDi Data Centre
- To contribute to the development of data management policies and strategies for DNDi Data Centre
- To ensure compliance with data management standards and best practices.
III. Main duties and responsibilities:
- To assist with setting up data management systems for the data centre together with the implementation, review and monitoring of those systems.
- To design, set up and validate databases and data entry screens for research projects and prepare the necessary documentation for this.
- To develop, write and test data range and inconsistency checks.
- To ensure that data queries are raised and resolved in a timely and accurate manner.
- To provide feedback and training to study teams regarding common data errors.
- To supervise, train data assistants and data entry staff.
- To provide input into case report form development.
- To contribute to the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the data team, in compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
- To coordinate data entry and other data management activities both at trial sites and DC (including Electronic Data Capture)
- To contribute to developing effective systems and procedures for ensuring an efficient and reliable data management service in DNDi Data Centre
- Any other tasks as requested by the head of Data Centre.
IV. Terms of Employment:
- Salary will be commensurate with skills and experience and in line with DNDi remuneration scales.
- Contract is 2 years, renewable by mutual agreement and subject to exemplary performance, 3 months probation, notice period 1 month.
