Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Appeals Division, Office of the Prosecutor.
Responsibilities
Review, analyze, and select evidence to be used by the Prosecution in appeal proceedings; conduct legal research as needed regarding international humanitarian law, comparative criminal law and procedure, evidence and policy issues; format briefs; ensure timely and accurate submission, corrections, cross-referencing, and indexing of transcripts and court proceedings. Draft legal motions and submissions on behalf of the prosecution and in response to defense motions to be litigated before the Appeals Chamber. Prepare legal opinions for internal discussion as requested. Perform other legal tasks as requested by the Appeals Counsel.

Education
Advanced university degree in law with specialisation in criminal law, international criminal law, or human rights law. Admission to practice law in a national jurisdiction is desirable. A first level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
Work Experience
Minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible experience in the field of criminal law, international criminal law or . Litigation experience is an asset.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the Tribunal. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of a second official UN language is an advantage.
Assessment Method
There will be a technical test and competency-based interview.
Special Notice
The appointment is limited to ICTY. Extension of the appointment is subject to the extension of the mandate and/or the availability of funds. As the international tribunals are not integrated in the Secretariat, UN Staff Members serve on assignment or secondment from their parent department/office if selected. Appointments of staff members in the United Nations are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General. Staff Members are expected to move periodically to new functions in accordance with established rules and procedures, and may in this context be reassigned by the Secretary-General throughout the Organization based on the changing needs and mandates.
