The PATH Regional Systems Administrator is a position unique to PATH’s country and program offices outside of the United States. This position will provide users with first level technical support and problem resolution for hardware and software issues. The Regional Systems Administrator will work independently or under the guidance of more experienced PATH IT personnel to act as technical liaison with local or network systems providers, analyze PATH user requests, perform system and PC moves/adds/changes, track and monitor local hardware and software inventory, install IT hardware and software, prepare reports, schedule and perform new hire orientations, perform basic application training, and act as a ‘remote hands’ resource for more complex implementations. The position is based in Johannesburg, but will execute the job responsibilities for this work in other South Africa offices, as well as countries in southern Africa, and several countries in West Africa.
Specific duties and responsibilities include:
- Work with local managers to determine appropriate personnel system rights and permissions, and work with PATH IT to apply such rights and permissions.
- Respond to requests for technical assistance from on-site and field office staff. Diagnose and resolve, or escalate where appropriate, such requests for assistance.
- Install user software and provide user software training.
- Configure and install user desktop and laptop PCs, and requisite software, including antivirus software.
- Install and maintain IT-specified hardware, such as servers, firewalls, network switches and routers, WAN accelerators, etcetera. Candidate may work under the direction of senior PATH IT personnel in this regard, where required.
- Oversee technical contractors performing such work for PATH in the field.
- Perform first-level troubleshooting of local user, network, PC, system and printer problems and virus issues. Accept and work on escalation requests from site IT assistants in the field.
- Perform IT site surveys for site expansions, new locations, technology additions, as well as site moves, adds and changes for PCs, systems, networks.
- Assist with getting technical equipment shipped to the site, and work with local shipping agencies and customs to that effect.
- Track PC and software installations
- Perform user orientation for PC, wireless, and system use
- Liaise with local technical service providers, network providers and ISPs on technical issues, and report on these issues.
- Advise senior PATH IT personnel and management on public and private infrastructure matters in the region.
- Stay current with, and report on, site hardware/software, changes and updates
- Stay current with PATH IT network and computer standards
- Demonstrated working knowledge of Windows 7 and XP Microsoft PC operating systems.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of Cisco network hardware, third-party firewalls, Wireless LAN technology.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server operating systems.
- Knowledge of internet-to-private network routing, and WAN acceleration technology.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with all levels of staff within the organization.
- Strong customer-service work ethic. Ability to explain technical concepts and procedures to non-users.
- Ability to work independently and within a team with little direct supervision.
- Strong learning and excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills.
- Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
- Fluency in French is desirable, but not critical.
- Strong analytic and problem-solving skills and the ability to prioritize and multi-task
- 4 year degree plus a minimum of 5 years of technical training at an accredited school, with a concentration in systems or information technology courses, or 5 years of experience in systems administration and troubleshooting PC, system, or network hardware and software issues at an organization of similar technical complexity or size.
