The World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide. We are currently seeking to fill an internship position under the Security Unit of the WFP Regional Bureau for Eastern and Central Africa (RBN).
The position will be based at the RBN in Nairobi, Kenya. The Internship will be for an initial period of 3 months starting from September 2015.
Description
The selected candidate will be assisting the WFP RBN Security Unit with the following key duties, working under the direct supervision of the Security Analyst:
- Conduct research on identified topics related to the political and security situation in countries of WFP operations in Eastern and Central Africa.
- Collect, collate, validate and analyze information from a variety of sources and prepare background notes, updates and reports on prioritized security-related issues.
- Assist in maintaining liaison with the RBN Emergency Preparedness and Response Unit, Field Security Officers (FSOs) and Security Focal Points (SFPs)in monitoring the political and security situation in countries of the region. Special focus is made on early warning indicators and early action benchmarks.
- Monitor upcoming events in the short-term, medium-term and long-term perspectives, highlighting events which have or may have impact on the security situation in countries of the region.
- Provide inputs to analytical products based on reliable sources of information - open and internal - and retrieve information from them to determine existing or emerging trends, highlight hotspots and problems, prepare updates and ensure follow-up to significant developments that affected or may affect WFP staff safety and security in countries of the region.
- Assist in preparation and update of Country Security Profiles (CSPs) for the countries of the region and ensure the updated versions are posted on the RBN Teamwork space.
- Ensure posting of analytical products (both internal and external) pertaining to the security situation in countries of the region on the RBN Security Unit Teamwork space.
- Assist in identifying sources of security and political information pertaining to countries of the region, prepare a list of such sources and make suggestions on its update and development.
- Perform other duties as required.
Essential Requirements
- Currently enrolled or have recently graduated from a University degree in Political or Social Science, International Relations, Research and Analysis in the areas of peace, conflict prevention or security;
- Have completed at least two years of undergraduate study;
- Have attended courses in the last 12 months;
- Proficiency in MsOffice (Word, Excel, Power Point);
- Fluent in English (both oral and written); knowledge of a second UN language, preferably French, would be an asset;
- Strong analytical and drafting skills;
- Ability to produce reports on political and security issues, preferably in the international perspective;
- Ability to carry out several tasks simultaneously, within a limited time frame.
Terms and Conditions
- Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP equivalent up to the amount of USD 700 per month depending on the duty station.
- WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, travel to and from WFP internship location, necessary visas and costs related.
