Access Afya (Access "Health" in Swahili) is a private social enterprise that targets Kenyan consumers in informal settlements with low cost, high quality, basic but critical health care services via micro-clinics. Our vision is to create a sustainable, scalable model for delivering critical health care services to underserved populations and to expand throughout Kenya and beyond. This vision is possible through standardization, rigorous business processes, a comprehensive IT system, community marketing, and planning for scale.
Background
Access Afya LLC was founded by CEO Melissa Menke in 2012. Access Afya Kenya is a wholly owned subsidiary, which set-up pilot operations in December 2012. The pilot has gained the organization international recognition and awards, grant funding to expand the model to three additional sites, and most importantly sold health services to over 1,500 clients in Nairobi's slums.
The number of staff will grow from eight to 24 by the end of the year and much higher in 2015. Grant funding is also supporting the development of an integrated health technology platform, school and workplace wellness programs, and a rural health program. By the end of Q2 2014, Access Afya will seek to demonstrate the success of its three urban clinics and the sustainability of its operating model. The aim then is to seek additional equity, debt and grant funding to scale much more rapidly, eventually developing a franchise model.
The Position
The Chief Operations Officer will work closely with the CEO in refining the Access Afya growth and development plan in line with the company's vision, values and goals. It is an opportunity to be part of a rising social enterprise's evolution into an established, growing healthcare business.
The COO will implement the strategy and execute the agreed operational activities. This will include responsibility for clinic and head office staff, financial management and day-to-day clinical operations, in liaison with the Clinical Director, and management of the supply chain for pharmaceuticals and other products. The COO will monitor and evaluate clinic performance and produce timely, detailed reports as needed.
The COO will also develop and implement project plans for IT, wellness centers, and rural health.
Although the clinical officers will be responsible for medical policies, the COO will be responsible for ensuring that policies and procedures are documented and that there are appropriate internal controls and checks.
The COO will lead the recruiting, support, and training of the growing team.
Qualifications and Competencies
The key requirement is demonstrable experience in operations management, preferably with large teams in difficult operating environments. Some experience of healthcare management would be an advantage. IT skills and strong financial management are also important. This is a key role in a young organisation: the COO will need to work closely with the CEO and share the vision.
