Located on a beautiful farm outside of Bagamoyo, Tanzania, The Baobab Home's mission is to foster a nurturing environment for children and their families to thrive. We accomplish this through a range of projects including a children's home for orphaned and vulnerable children, a primary school and outreach work in the Bagamoyo community. Over the course of the past 8 years we have responded to the changing needs of the HIV/AIDS crisis by establishing a number of community programs to assist with basic needs such as food, school and housing.
Who you are and what we need
A bright and enthusiastic individual seeking to gain experience in the field of marketing through the lens of an international, grassroots charity. A passion for overseas development and a strong interest in Africa would be a distinct advantage. A confident communicator, you will use your creativity to develop a marketing plan and participate in fundraising activities in order to raise awareness of the organization, generate donations and recruit qualified volunteers. You will be providing valuable support to a small and very dynamic, international team.
Location
This position requires that you be on-the-ground here in Bagamoyo, Tanzania which is an historic town about an hour and a half from the city of Dar es Salaam. You may choose to live in town near the beach, or on location at the farm.
Responsibilities
- Update and maintain the tzkids.org website and blog
- Develop and maintain the Baobab Home's presence on Twitter, Facebook
- Maintain and grow the Baobab Home's photo/video library
- Assist with development of fundraising and communications materials
- Assist with creation and distribution of newsletters and promotional items
- Work on initiatives to grow the network of Baobab Home supporters
- Help to accurately maintain Baobab's donor database.
- Meet virtually with those on the marketing committee
Essential Qualifications
- Willingness to explore a new culture and translate that experience for an international audience
- Excellent communication skills, written, verbal and interpersonal
- Self-motivated, you will be given guidance, but expect to jump in and take initiative as well
- Willingness to learn basic Swahili
- Good administrative and basic computer skills (including Microsoft Outlook, Word & Excel)
- Creativity and ability to work independently and meet deadlines
- Good research and internet skills
- Excellent team player
Desirable Qualifications
- Previous marketing, fundraising or events experience
- Experience of web updating using a content management system
- Experience with graphic design and programs such as Adobe Photoshop
- Interest in international development, particularly Africa
Renumeration
This is a voluntary position and is unpaid. Volunteers must provide their own living and travel expenses, including entry visa fee ($50/$100 US, depending on your country) and residence permit application fee ($550). Baobab will provide some meals. In special circumstances, very basic accommodation at the farm can be negotiated.
Duration
We prefer a commitment of 6 months and you will be asked to work 5 days per week, 6 hours per day. From past internships we have found that a six month commitment is the minimum period of time to ensure that the post is beneficial to both the intern and the Baobab Home.
