About AISE:
Accelerating Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship (AISE) is an innovation center that designs, inspires, and dissem- inates affordable technology to the rural poor. AISEs mission is to empowering local community members to improve their quality of life through the innovation and implementation of low-cost technologies. As an innovation center of Tanzanian students and instructors, AISE merges local experience and technical knowledge into innovations that are relevant for village households. Technologies built at AISE are affordable, comprised of locally available materials, and address a specific community need. Recent technologies include a bicycle-powered juice blender, solar-powered water heater, bicycle-powered cell phone charger, and multi-crop thresher. Through school and community work- shops, AISE also encourages Tanzanians to create their own solutions to community problems. Responsibilities:
The Director of Development will develop and manage a sustainable business plan for the establishment of AISE as the innovation center envisioned above. This position will work closely with Director of Technology, Bernard Kiwia, and D-Lab at MIT to expand AISEs impact by increasing product sales, number of technology workshops taught, and the number of community members using the AISE workshop. This will mainly involve the tasks outlined below:
• Manage company budget and expenses
• Write grant proposals and marketing materials
• Oversee and update AISEs media presence (i.e. website, Facebook, email)
• Day-to-day management of the innovation center workspace.
• Keep in constant conversation with Mr. Kiwia so as to ensure AISE grows in a fashion that aligns with his vision and personal capacities.
• Routinely report on project finances and progress to the D-Lab innovation center coordinators as well as the appropriate granting agency(ies)
Requirements:
The ideal candidate is a college graduate who has experience working with NGOs in the East African context. S/he is comfortable doing business in both English and Kiswahili and have a background in fundraising and business management. Knowledge of appropriate technologies and their applicability for the low-income villagers is also preferred. This contract is provided for 6 months to 1 year with the possibility for renewal and is offered as a part-time position, requiring 20-25 hours per week. Below, key position requirements are highlighted:
• University-level degree
• Fluency in English in Kiswahili
• Expresses competency in business management and fundraising
• 1 year experience working in East Africa
Desired Skills:
• Masters degree or other tertiary schooling in business or management
• Familiarity with basic accounting and finance principles
• Specific experience running or managing the business structure of an NGO or social enterprise in Tanzania
• Good knowledge of appropriate technologies and their applications for rural Tanzanian villages
• Familiarity with how to market products in Tanzania and/or the greater East African community
• Genuine commitment to the principles of sustainable technology development
