Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is a leading independent international medical aid agency, dedicated to providing expert medical assistance to vulnerable populations at times of conflict or disaster. In some 80 countries worldwide, MSF provides both life-saving emergency relief and longer-term assistance to make basic healthcare services available to the most vulnerable or excluded communities
The Programmes Unit
Lying at the heart of MSF-UK/IE’s strategic plan, the work of the Programme Unit is central to establishing MSF as a credible and critical voice within the UK environment, and within MSF itself. The UK is a key player in humanitarian and global health issues. Both governmental and non-governmental actors (including both the private and the NGO sector) play important roles in international politics; the funding and delivery of humanitarian assistance; and the development of international health policy and delivery of healthcare. MSF, as a leading provider of independent, medical humanitarian assistance, can make a critical, distinct and influential contribution to these debates, as well as bringing key points back to inform our own practice.
Head of Programmes
You will lead a field-experienced team designed to stimulate change, both in support of MSF operations and in challenging policy and practice in the wider humanitarian arena, and will be challenged to make an impact on MSF’s ability to deliver timely and quality medical humanitarian assistance to vulnerable group. You will be a leader who is also a teammate and contributor, one who is capable of empowering others and enhancing the overall output.
You will also have proven strategic vision, critical analysis and reflection skills, as well as demonstrating an understanding and experience related to the current issues in humanitarian action and/or global health and medical issues.
We are seeking someone with ‘field’ experience, which you may have gained whilst working with MSF or a similar humanitarian field.
This is an exciting opportunity, as you will have become a key MSF player in its efforts to develop analysis and strategy of advocacy/positioning towards the global aid system, including global health actors. Plus, the role will require you to travel to MSF offices and field projects, so you will get the opportunity to build your network across the movement and further build your field experience.
