Head of Transport Unit


Purpose of the post

To handle and supervise all aspects of transport services (area, road, rail and ocean processes) to ICRC operations in accordance with ICRC standards and policies. The Head of transport Unit is responsible to manage his team, deliver efficient and effective transportation.

Main responsibilities

  • Lead, manage and coach his/her team in line with the ICRC values.
  • Propose transportation solutions to Logistics Field operations.
  • Plan transportation activities.
  • Procure transport in line with Procurement rules and policies.
  • Ensure and manage compliance of practices to OFAC policies.
  • Ensure compliance with IATA standards, rules and recommendations.
  • Secure transportation market intelligence and report trends.
  • Monitor, follow-up and report transportation logistics indicators.
  • Design, propose, updated and improved standard working procedures.
  • Execute on the division's strategy, priorities and objectives.
  • Develop he's/her team's talents with adequate training/coaching plans.
  • Monitor, follow-up and report team's performance indicators.
  • Prepare, present and implement approved budget.
  • Provide accurate that to management and other internal stakeholders as required
  • Comply with ICRC financial and administrative policies rules and regulations.

Main tasks

  • Manage his/her team objectives and tasks.
  • Secure the day-to-day running of the Unit and its activities.
  • Participate to transversal coordination meeting whether RDU or recurrent operation to contribute to Satigny Performance and Supply Chain efficiency.
  • Negotiate and contract best conditions for transportation services.
  • Process invoices in line with his/her responsibility.
  • Manage and process transport litigations and claims.
  • Supervise personnel belonging management in line with art 24 RPM.
  • Report on risks.
  • Participate to the field budget calculation as required.
  • Participate to logistic tools development.
  • Participate to the LOG Management Team Meeting.
  • Report missions and achievements.
  • Describe, optimise and report working procedures.
  • Maintain networking activities to secure service continuity.
  • Be available to undertake field missions as required.
  • Others as assigned.

Training and experience required

  • University/Master degree in logistics/freight forwarding/or equivalent.
  • five years of experience in International transportation in freight forwarding.five years of experience in people management.

Skills and qualifications

  • Good market intelligence in International transportation (not only in context such as Africa, East and Middle East).
  • Expert knowledge of all transport operation (including ops, security, etc).
  • Expert knowledge of customs documentation and procedures.
  • Knowledge of freight rates.
  • Key account procedure knowledge.
  • Willingness to be multi modal.
  • Negotiation skills.
  • Fluent in English and French.
  • German is an asset.
  • Customer oriented, quality focus.
  • Ability to assess and analyse.
  • Strong communication/collaborative skills with internal/external stakeholders.
  • Ability to be the network.
  • Supervisory skills.
  • Time management.
  • Financial awareness.
  • IT literate.
