Base salary from USD 45,000 – 55,000 per annum depending on skills and experience, with an attractive international benefits package (tax free*).
The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of poverty in developing countries. The Position:
ILRI seeks to recruit a Governance and Resilience Scientist to work within the Livestock Systems and the Environment team.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and apply methodologies for research and impact assessment on:
- Interventions aimed at building resilience to climate stress (drought and floods) across livestock systems, livelihoods and landscapes;
- Institutional and governance dimensions of vulnerability, agricultural intensification, and climate change adaptation, and conduct research applying these methodologies;
- Institutional support to allow women and other marginalized groups to benefit from payments for ecosystem services.
- Conduct research on the following additional areas:
- Factors that facilitate cross-sectoral planning in dryland agricultural systems;
- The role of policy in facilitating effective natural resource management and climate change adaptation at local level;
- Alternative models of natural resource management and governance and the relevance of payments for ecosystem services for each; and
- Institutional and governance factors that enable or constrain programmes of payments for ecosystem services.
- Work with modellers and GIS analysts to develop empirical tools for monitoring, evaluation and impact assessment of improved governance, planning, institutional mechanisms for enhancing adaptive capacity and payments for ecosystem services.
- Publish research results and present research at conferences;
- Contribute to the development of new research proposals and mobilize funding for further research;
- Organize workshops with multiple stakeholders
- Engage with government and development partners.
Essential Skills and Qualifications will include:
- PhD in one of the following fields: Social/Human Geography, Sociology, Anthropology, Environmental Studies, Natural Resource Management, Development Studies;
- At least 2 – 4 years post-doctoral experience in governance
- Dissertation must have focused on institutional and/or governance dimensions of rural livelihood systems in a developing country;
- Qualitative and quantitative data analysis skills;
- Excellent demonstrable English writing skills and competency in a language widely spoken in Africa other than English will be an added advantage;
- Strong analytical thinker with a problem-solving attitude
- Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work flexibly in multicultural, multidisciplinary teams
- Innovative and creative
- Ability to work independently
- Willingness to travel throughout Africa
Post location: This position is in Nairobi, Kenya or Addis Ababa Ethiopia.
Position level: Scientist level 1 (4C).
Duration: 3 years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.
