General:  The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works at the crossroads of livestock and poverty, bringing high-quality livestock science, communications and capacity building to bear on poverty reduction and sustainable development. ILRI has campuses in Kenya (headquarters) and Ethiopia, with other offices located in Africa (Botswana, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Uganda) as well as Asia (China, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Sri Lanka).
The position: ILRI is recruiting 4 (Four) Research Site Coordinators positions for Africa RISING program (http://africa-rising.net). Based in South Tigray region at Maychew, Oromia region at Sinana, in Southern Nation, Nationalities and People’s Region (SNNPR) at  Hosaina and Amhara region at Debre Birhan, who will be  members of the Animal Science for Sustainable Productivity Program.
Main Duties:
The site coordinators are responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the Africa RISING research activities at the site for which they are responsible. Their main duties are to:
  • Conduct regular monitoring visit to the households and community organisations participating in the project to ensure their continuing engagement in the work and that their needs are being met
  • support project partners (researchers from the regional centres , Woreda technical specialists and Kebelle Development Agents) in their effective participation in the project
  • Participate and assist in the delivery of on farm training sessions and community group meetings.
  • Participate and facilitate local workshops.
  • Coordinate the delivery of any research supplies required to the project sites.
  • Manage and account for any per diems or other allowances payable to project participants.
  • Report on progress and problems to the Project Facilitator.
  • Represent ILRI in creating strong partnership with local players.
Minimum Requirements:
Education:
  • Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree with strongly relevant experience or equivalent.
Experience:
  • At least 2 years relevant experience
Skills:
  • Good technical knowledge (at the appropriate level) of factors affecting productivity on smallholder mixed farms in the Ethiopian Highlands (including farm scale and NRM issues)
  • Ability to liaise and communicate with Woreda and Kebele staff and researchers in regional centres
  • Ability to deliver technical training to farmers and Development Agents in Amharic
  • Honest with good, basic financial management capabilities
  • Basic IT skills for report writing / presentations and data handling / analysis

Grade:   2D level 3.
Minimum Base Salary:   Birr 13,388
Terms of appointment:  This is Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Addis Ababa campus.  Initial appointment is fixed term for two years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc.
