Total salary & benefits package circa USD 90,000 (tax free*) Base salary from USD 45,000 per annum plus benefits. (dependent on qualifications and experience)
The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works at the crossroads of livestock and poverty, bringing high-quality livestock science, communications and capacity building to bear on poverty reduction and sustainable development. ILRI is one of 15 centres supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ILRI has campuses in Kenya (headquarters) and Ethiopia, with other offices located in other regions of Africa (Mali, Mozambique, and Nigeria) as well as in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam) and East Asia (China).
ILRI will be working on a number of CGIAR Research Programs (CRP) that bring together CGIAR centers and partners from the research, development and private sector communities around the world.
The Position This is an international appointment reporting to the Team Leader. This position is on a three year term appointment with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding, and is based at ILRI’s Headquarters in Nairobi.
Key responsibilities
• Conduct research in the following areas: o Greenhouse gas emissions, carbon sequestration, and mitigation potentials; o Farm and landscape level productivity, nutrient use efficiency, and profitability o Life cycle analysis; o Household-level modeling ; o Synergies and tradeoffs among climate change mitigation and other ecosystem services. • Engage with development partners in the humanitarian and climate communities; • Engage with government partners; • Publication of journal articles (as lead and co-author) and other publications; • Communicate research to different types of audiences; • Coordinate scientific activities and teams whenever required.
Requirements
• PhD in Agronomy, Agro-ecology, or Environmental sciences; • 3-5 years post-doctoral experience • Knowledge of nutrient cycles in crop and livestock systems and the scientific basis of climate change; • Experience with greenhouse gases field measurements; • Knowledge of modeling techniques(i.e. crop models, biogeochemical models, spatial modeling); • Strong scientific publications record; • Qualitative and quantitative data analysis and management skills; • Excellent demonstrable English writing skills; • Knowledge of French and Spanish will be considered assets • Strong analytical and strategic thinker with a problem-solving attitude; • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work flexibly in multicultural, multidisciplinary teams; • A sense of creativity and ability to work independently; • Willingness to travel throughout Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
Post location: The position is based at ILRI’s Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. Extensive travel to other countries and regions will be required, particularly throughout Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Position level: The position is Scientist/Research Level 1 dependent on qualifications and experience.
Duration: 3 years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.
