About the Position:
Internet Society Chapters comprise a volunteer network of ISOC individual members who are key contributors in carrying the mission of the Internet Society forward. The Director of Chapters role requires significant interaction with Chapters and their volunteer leadership, individual members and ISOC staff to strengthen and significantly enhance the impact of the Internet Society worldwide in pursuing its mission.
The role is responsible for directing the Chapter Development Programme for Internet Society Chapters and their volunteer members.
The role requires strategic vision, leadership, strategic planning and budgeting skills. It also requires outstanding communication skills, a proven track record of excellence in community building and diplomacy, the ability to multi-task in managing ISOC tools, programs and outreach to meet project and budget deadlines that contribute to the organization’s success.
This position is ideally based in Europe.
Responsibilities:
Working in close collaboration with the Regional Bureau Directors and other functional and program staff:
• Lead the Internet Society Chapter strategy and implementation through vision, consultation, management of staff and building strong relationships with Chapters
• Develop and implement programmes for effective Chapter relations, including oversight of the implementation of MoU’s, policies and procedures, Chapter goals and plans.
• Provide leadership, training and skill development through face-to-face meetings, workshops, on-line training and materials to Chapter officers in order to increase the professionalism of Chapter leaders.
• Be a resource to Chapter leaders to advise on issues such as governance, goals, plans and operations and practices, for maximum sustainability and growth for non-profit associations.
• Develop and implement programmes that encourage and maximise opportunities for Chapter members to contribute to the work of the Internet Society at a local level.
• Promote and facilitate opportunities for engagement between Chapter members and headquarters programme staff.
• Work with ISOC’s functional departments and staff to develop programmes and activities which will support Chapter outreach and local engagement activities.
• Side by side with Chapter leaders take the lead in development of new Chapter programmes and services.
• Address and resolve enquiries from existing and prospective Chapters.
• Serve as the point of contact with Chapters regarding questions and issues related to the Internet Society membership system.
• With Internet Leadership (IL), develop and implement ISOC tools and resources to assist Chapter leadership, management, administration and programme development.
• Lead and manage the Chapter Support team, mentoring, directing and supporting the staff for optimum professional development and results toward goals.
• Manage and develop the budget for Chapters, including reporting as necessary.
• Prepare annual strategic and tactical plans with supporting projected budgets for review and submission.
• Develop and implement effective communications strategies using the all appropriate means including, electronic communication applications and tools, in coordination with the ISOC Communications Department.
Desired Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree, minimum. Advanced degree a plus
• Minimum of 7 years of association or non-profit related experience, involved with international membership and/or international chapters. In addition to international experience, it is critical that the individual understand the challenges in working with a large diverse international member and chapter base.
• Demonstrated track record of community building in a volunteer or NGO capacity.
• Experience working in multiple regions of the world.
• Demonstrated leadership skills, vision and strategic thinking in order to effectively develop and manage a programme for increasing Chapter activity, projects, professionalism and leadership.
• Demonstrated ability to understand and work with a variety of cultural norms leading to the development and local implementation of multi-faceted strategic plans.
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Willingness and ability to travel frequently; at least 25%
• Able to handle and prioritize many projects concurrently
• Strong knowledge of IT, strong computer skills and familiarity with electronic communication applications and tools absolutely essential
• Must have the ability to quickly gain trust of broad community and build enduring relationships across a vibrant international community
• The ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English, both in writing and verbally is required, as well as proficiency in at least one additional language.
