General Description:
The IVI’s program in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has the goal to reduce the burden of diarrheal disease and acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) in DPRK children through the introduction of new vaccines into the country’s routine immunization program. The Associate Research Scientist will be under the supervision of the DPRK Program Coordinator and be responsible for the set-up of disease surveillance for AES and diarrheal diseases, field implementation of clinical trials, field monitoring and evaluation, data analyses, result reporting and publication of findings from epidemiologic studies of the program. The incumbent will coordinate all aspects of field collaboration with other IVI scientists and staff in order to benefit the mission and goals of the IVI.Specific Responsibilities:
- The successful applicant will be responsible for the field planning and the implementation and management of the assigned scientific research programs within the IVI’s DPRK program. This includes frequent and prolonged travels to the DPRK and other countries.
- (S)he will develop protocols, guidelines, training materials, SOPs for the set-up of case-referral system and surveillance network and work with DPRK scientists to guide them and implement necessary clinical trial activities.
- (S)he will work together with other IVI scientists and administrative staff to help procure supplies, equipment and reagents to the DPRK and will provide necessary logistic, technical and managerial support and assist the sites in the set-up/maintenance of field site activities, preparation of protocols, documents and SOPs.
- (S)he will work with DPRK scientific staff and IVI’s laboratory experts for setting-up the reference laboratory and will constitute an integral part to setting-up the vaccination campaign conducted in partnership with another NGO, develop/review the SOPs, monitor cold chain and vaccination practices and collect data for the debriefing report.
- The incumbent will also assist local principal investigators in data collection, data analyses, report writing, and publications from the IVI and other partners and widely cited peer-reviewed journals, and it is expected that the incumbent will serve as a lead or co-lead author on at least some of these publications.
- The incumbent will also provide support in the planning and implementation of new programs intended to establish and strengthen research capabilities in developing countries.
- (S)he will perform other tasks as assigned by the Project Coordinator for this and other projects as required.
Formal Requirements:
- MD, PHD, MPH or equivalent degree
- Over 4 years practical experience in management of projects/programs in developing countries, preferably in an international non-governmental organization environment
- Fluent in English (written and spoken)
Desirable:
- Prior experience in field-based research
- Knowledge of basic Korean
- Good command of computer and communication systems
