Position Title: 4-H Africa Program Director Reports to: 4-H Africa Managing Director Type of Position: Full-Time Contract ending May 2014 Salary: Commensurate with skills and experience. Relocation is not available for this contract Location: Major East African city (Nairobi preferred) Travel: Regional and International Citizenship: The position is open to African Union nationals who are willing and able to work in Sub-Saharan Africa. Starting Date: As soon as a suitable candidate can be found Job Summary: The Global Clover Network, a subsidiary of National 4-H Council (USA), seeks an experienced international youth and/or agricultural development professional to implement Africa focused strategies for the Global Clover initiatives. A key role will be to build the capacity and capabilities of 4-H professionals and volunteers in 5 African country-led 4-H organizations (Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, and Ethiopia) and to deliver high quality Positive Youth Development (PYD) programs. The successful candidate will work with Global Clover Network and country-led 4-H organizations to implement grant funded initiatives and play a leadership role in managing a $3.5 million budget. About Global 4-H: 4-H programs have taken root in more than 70 countries in North, South, and Central America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Worldwide, 4-H programs operate autonomously but all share the goal of improving the lives of 7 million young people and their families. Around the world, 4-H is proven as an effective tool for agricultural and economic development. 4-H “graduates” have skills that enable them to craft a sustainable livelihood for themselves and their families, and will enter adulthood ready to serve as catalysts for positive change in their communities, economies, and governments. In Africa particularly, 4-H engages close to 200,000 young people in 11 countries. With the support of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and DuPont, 4-H will increase the capacity of staff and volunteers to aggressively expand the program across the continent over the next 2 years, while reaching 250,000 young people with agriculture and economic skills. RESPONSIBILITIES Leadership · With direction from the Managing Director, 4-H Africa, facilitate 4-H African country-led 4-H organizations to develop culturally relevant and sustainable replication models for community-based 4-H Positive Youth Development programs. · Collaborate with Africa country-led 4-H organizations and represent their voice in the development and implementation of the Africa area business plan, annual budget and multiyear financial projections for National 4-H Council’s (USA) initiatives. Fundraising · Partner with Senior Vice President of Resource Development at National 4-H Council (USA) to develop case statements for social capital investments to support African country-led 4-H organizations. Management · Recruit and manage contracts with professional consultants and other grantees related to the initiatives. · Manage, monitor, evaluate and report on Global Clover Network’s (National 4-H Council’s) grant-making, capacity building and technical assistance activities with 4-H African country program partners, including Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania and others. · Demonstrate Human Resources expertise in managing diverse multicultural staff, volunteers and consultants in multiple locations in Africa. · Direct the development and implementation of tools and systems for monitoring, evaluation, and impact measurement in support of Africa area initiatives. · Collaborate with 4-H Kenya and other knowledge providers to sustain and grow global web presence and online resources relevant to Africa country-led 4-H organizations (particularly the Global 4-H Knowledge Center). Program and Network Development · Translate global strategic objectives into strategies for Sub Saharan Africa and direct annual work plans for Council (USA) and its partners. · Coordinate technical assistance and capacity building initiatives that align with the priorities of country program partners. · Collaborate with network countries to implement and evaluate strategies. QUALIFICATIONS · Professional experience in the cultural contexts of Sub Saharan Africa required. · Experience working in the youth development field highly desirable. · Graduate degree in international development, business, public administration, agricultural education or economics, nonprofit management, social enterprise or related fields preferred. · Minimum 7 years of professional experience in both multicultural and dynamic leadership roles. · Demonstrated success working in a team environment. · Facilitation skills and experience a plus. · Success as a leader or social entrepreneur in an organizational start-up or turn around. · Goal-oriented and proficient in prioritizing and managing multiple tasks with varying deadlines. · Excellent project management skills. · Must be a self-starter with strong leadership and management skills. · Excellent verbal and written presentation skills. · Fluency in English required; fluency in multiple languages preferred. · Superior interpersonal skills and problem resolution skills. · Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office. · Extensive regional travel. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Long periods of sitting at computer. Lifting up to 20 lbs. Position requires ability to work for prolonged periods of time at high levels of activity and the ability to sit for more than four hours per day, reading, listening, bending and manual dexterity skills; skills essential for successful communications include speaking and writing. ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS Ability to work in various settings, including hotel rooms, conference rooms, and home office.
