Aga Khan Health Services: With community health programmes in large geographical areas in Central and South Asia, as well as East Africa, and more than 200 health facilities including nine hospitals, the Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) is one of the most comprehensive private not-for-profit health care systems in the developing world. AKHS now provides primary health care and curative medical care in Afghanistan, India, Kenya, Pakistan, and Tanzania, and provides technical assistance to government in health service delivery in Kenya, Syria and Tajikistan.
The Aga Khan Health Services, Tanzania (AKHS,T) comprising a 74 bed secondary care hospital (Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salam) and 5 upcountry medical centers, is the premier health care system in Tanzania. Annually, on an outpatient basis, a total of 300,000 patients visit AKHS,T facilities and the Hospital admits over 6,000 patients. The Aga Khan Hospital is also a teaching site for Post Graduate Medical Education programs of the Aga Khan University (AKU) and the Ministry of Health in Tanzania.
As part of its development, both the Hospital as well as the upcountry medical centers have completed ambitious plans to expand services and facilities. The Aga Khan Hospital is poised to become a major tertiary hospital providing a comprehensive cardiology program, oncology services, neurosciences and maternal and child health. These will be backed by state of the art diagnostic and critical care services. The upcountry medical centers will be transformed into Family and Community Health centers with a strong focus on preventative care, maternal and child health, appropriate diagnostic services and tele health connectivity with The Aga Khan Hospital.
The CEO provides leadership for the overall strategic and operational planning & management of AKHST and reports to the Board of AKHS,T.
Key areas of responsibility will include:
• Overall strategic, financial and operational planning, development and implementation as well as risk management;
• In view of the proposed expansion of The Aga Khan Hospital and the Upcountry Medical centers, the CEO will work and take accountability for ensuring that these developments are completed within schedule and budget. This will require the CEO to work closely with both the project as well as the clinical/administrative teams to ensure successful completion and commissioning of these programs as well as management of risks.
• Collaborating and promoting regional strategies with other AKDN agencies including the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi, AKHS, Kenya, and the Aga Khan Foundation East Africa relating to health services, health education and creating synergies relating to clinical and administrative functions;
• Establishing high performing teams and developing local capacity for clinical and administrative functions
• Establishing effective communications strategies and working relationships with the public agencies, other AKDN agencies, physicians, staff and other stakeholders
• Facilitating academic/programmatic plans and the clinical program of Post-Graduate Medical Education and other Health Sciences Education programs.
The ideal candidate will have the following profile:
• Masters Degree in Health Care or in Business Administration with specialization in Hospital Administration as well as experience of working at a senior level in health care.
• 8 to 10 years of executive-level experience in Health Care Administration in a Hospital or International Health Organization environment.
• Extensive knowledge of current health care administration, principles and practices.
• Extensive knowledge of modern patient care and management principles, practices and procedures including accounting & finance, purchasing, personnel, facilities, office procedure & records, human resource and related supporting services within Hospital areas.
•Ability to analyze operational data and employ approved management techniques to obtain maximum effectiveness and efficiency.
•Ability to coordinate effectively various hospital functions and activities for maximum cooperation and efficiency.
•Ability to direct, instruct and advise administrative staff in the approved methods, procedures and practices employed in effective health care administration.
•Ability to receive and effectively react to day-to-day problems and issues.
•Ability to interpret established policies into operating procedures to facilitate implementation of hospital programs.
•Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Hospital staff.
•Ability to evaluate concerns of the public and translate public concerns into effective operations procedures.
•Experience of working effectively at a strategic level.
