Monitoring & Evaluation Officer , African People & Wildlife Fund

The Tanzania People & Wildlife Fund (TPW) is a Tanzanian nonprofit organization dedicated to the
conservation of wildlife and important natural habitats through a community-based approach. TPW
helps rural communities develop their skills and abilities to protect natural resources in a manner that
maximizes their benefits from these landscapes while also preserving ecological integrity. Emphasizing
the critical importance of community-led initiatives, the organization provides information, training and
service level support to its rural constituencies to strengthen local institutions and community-driven
actions for natural resource management and wildlife conservation.
TPW operates from the Noloholo Environmental Center on the Maasai Steppe in northern Tanzania.
Sharing a boundary with Tarangire National Park, this center acts as TPW’s regional headquarters as well
as an educational center where rural community members improve their understanding of the
environment and develop hands-on skills in natural resource management. From this center, TPW
operates programs in four major programmatic areas: 1) human-wildlife conflict prevention, (2) youth
environmental education and adult capacity building & training, (3) natural resource conservation and
rangeland management, and (4) environmentally-sustainable conservation enterprise and development.
Position Description:
TPW is looking for a passionate, energetic and experienced individual to work closely with the CoFounders
- Executive Director, Dr. Laly Lichtenfeld and Director of Programs, Charles Trout – a
Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist – Christy Ihlo – and TPW staff to expand the organization’s capacity
in Monitoring & Evaluation for its community-based conservation programs in northern Tanzania. We
are looking for a person with proven experience in the Monitoring & Evaluation of conservation
initiatives using both traditional and innovative methodologies in collecting and analyzing field data for
internal and external reports. The successful candidate will also have impressive communication and
interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in a multi-cultural environment with diverse stakeholders.
This position will be stationed at the Noloholo Environmental Center, so he or she should be willing to
work in remote areas for the majority of the time. We anticipate the position will require equal amounts
of time for the development of monitoring and evaluation tools, field data collection and program
monitoring oversight and data analysis and reporting.
Key Responsibilities:
• Assist TPW and partners to enhance the organization’s capacity in Monitoring & Evaluation so
that it can achieve its community-based conservation goals and objectives.
• Evaluate, monitor and strengthen the performance of TPW’s field-based programs
• Develop an overall Monitoring & Evaluation system for TPW, including a well-defined structure
and design, all data collection methodologies, solutions to TPW’s current monitoring gaps, and a
long-term plan for monitoring the organization’s progress in data-driven adaptive management.
• Support TPW’s directors to strengthen the capacity of TPW’s team via onsite/field training with
the goal of improving self-sufficiency within the teams.
• Manage TPW’s database and data collection systems, including the use of ODK and potential
adoption of new software and technologies, such as SMART conservation software.
• Develop relevant maps and geospatial analyses of TPW’s conservation interventions.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate should have 3 years of full-time experience in conservation, with a focus on
Monitoring & Evaluation and the ability to quickly learn and master new data collection systems.
Individuals should have experience monitoring and evaluating community-based conservation initiatives
and related ventures in the social sciences and other fields. Preference will be given to candidates with
prior experience in large carnivore conservation, program monitoring and evaluation, and reporting.
• Master’s degree or equivalent work experience in one of the above fields.
• Proven experience in designing and implementing Monitoring & Evaluation systems.
• Background in managing databases, providing data analysis, reporting
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other database relevant software
• Strong proficiency in GIS mapping and analyses
• High abilities in training and capacity building.
• Strong interpersonal skills, including respect for other cultures.
• Experience with community-based conservation.
• Passionate concern for big cats, local communities and TPW’s mission.
• Willingness to live in a remote setting.
• Excellent spoken and written English skills.
Reports to: Director of Programs
Salary & Benefits: Full-time position based on experience and qualifications; salary commensurate with
experience. Basic housing and food provided onsite.
