An innovation in Gender Equality (IGE) is a four-year programme funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by International Development Division (100), a division of Land O'Lakes, Inc., in Tanzania. This programme aims to develop local capacity for building and sustaining women's empowerment in Tanzania's agriculture sector.

• 1. Senior Incubation Advisor
The Tanzania Innovations in Gender Equality (IGE) to Promote Household Food Security Program is a USAID-funded program that has been operating in Tanzania for the last two-year (Oct 2012-Sept 2014) implemented by Land O’Lakes Inc. The program is designed to strengthen gender equity in Tanzania by harnessing the full capacity of the country’s rich array of public and private organizations focused on agriculture and women’s needs. Tanzania IGE is achieving this by facilitating the creation of the Centre for the Advancement of Women in Agriculture in Tanzania (CAWAT). This is a coordinated, multi-stakeholder coalition of Tanzania public, private, and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) dedicated to strategically promoting change that advances gender equality and women’s empowerment in agriculture, food security, and nutrition.
Over the last two years of its operations, IGE has demonstrated a potential to create great opportunities and produce significant positive impact on the livelihoods of women smallholder farmers. An extension has been granted to IGE to continue its good work for another 2 years (November 2014 - October 2016). With this opportunity to extend its reach, IGE will continue to facilitate the competitive solicitation and development of vital agriculture technologies that ease women farmers’ time and labor burdens; support the scale-up and dissemination of these technologies; provide leadership development and business incubation trainings; foster mentorship; and address policy constraints that hinder women’s full participation along the agriculture value chain.
Position Responsibilities
The Business Incubation Advisor will be expected to deliver the support needed by women in agriculture innovation awardees and to serve as a liaison in between formal trainings and potential markets of their technologies.
Scope of Responsibilities
Responsible for the overall strategy and implementation of Intermediary Result 1 (IR1) of the IGE program: *Women friendly agricultural technologies identified, disseminated and adopted.- Carry out all business incubation activities in pursuit of the ultimate goal of IGE to empower Tanzanian women in agriculture and food security, with the desired outcomes of IR being the scale-up, wider adoption and external investment in the most promising innovations
Work closely with technical counterparts at the KFIE program (Land O’Lakes sister project based in Nairobi, Kenya) to adopt, refine and adapt several KFIE innovation assessment tools, as well as working closely with the IGE M&E specialist to design and implement monitoring and evaluation tools for use by the IGE program to better assess and evaluate whether innovations are successful and ready to move to subsequent stages of development and funding
Lead the short-listing, final selection and due diligence process to assess the viability of innovator applications and proposals
Report to and collaborate closely with the IGE Director of Grants and Operations to develop SOWs for grantees and monitor their performance in collaboration with the IGE M&E Specialist.
Work closely with the Business Incubation Advisor on a daily basis, guiding and mentoring her activities within the same IR, subdividing the total group of innovators into two portfolios, serving as the point person for one of those portfolios, supervising the Business Incubation Advisor as they take the lead on the other, and providing providing backstopping support for one another
Provide intensive individual guidance and mentoring to a portfolio of innovators on business skills, providing tailored coaching and consulting based on the unique needs of each innovator.
Support and assist innovators in their development of relevant strategy documents, including SWOT analysis, marketing strategies, business plans, and exit strategies for investors
Support and assist innovators in developing financial analytics as needed, including projected cash flows, and break-even analysis
Oversee Business Incubation Advisor’s efforts to refine and deliver business incubation training to a sub-group innovators who have received grants from IGE to pilot their technologies
Ensure that innovators are trained in basic costing and pricing as well as tracking revenue, profit and number of products sold. Ensure that these concepts are mastered through careful follow-up and site visits
Advise and oversee training of innovators in marketing and sales, enabling them to articulate a solid value proposition for their product or service, increase sales, and secure external financing to grow their business
Advise and oversee the training of innovators in conducting market surveys and needs assessments with business owners and potential clients on the awardees technologies. Ensure mastery of concepts by reviewing outputs and following up with Business Incubation Advisor on methods for reinforcing learning.
Oversee Business Incubation Advisor’s efforts to plan, coordinate and organize networking and pitch events as outlined in IGE’s program description, whereby innovators have an opportunity to network with potential investors, facilitate connections among relevant contacts in the local business and government communities who can help client groups continue to grow
Support and assist the Business Incubation Advisor to identify and facilitate participation of the awardees in organized entrepreneurship contests and small business fairs external to IGE
Serve as an initial link to business and community leaders, key individuals and groups within universities, and other economic development agencies to promote business development and related services for the awardees.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in business administration, entrepreneurship or related field
A minimum 5 years demonstrated experience of business consulting and providing business/technical assistance to client companies.
Experience with business startups, business development, finance, sales and marketing
Knowledge of entrepreneurship and small enterprise development entrepreneurial financial / lending practices and small business tax requirements
Previous experience providing personalized counseling, coaching and/or advisory sessions to design and implement business plans experience
Technical skills and knowledge of entrepreneurship and small enterprise development
Elaborate and lead workshops and personal advisory sessions regarding small business start-ups for poor and marginal populations.
Knowledge of business management principles, budget formulation and financial management, break-even analysis, cash flows, and property management and leasing.
