Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
The Regional Office for Africa (Climate Adaptation ) internship is for 3 months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the department.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Under the direct supervision of the regional Climate Change Adaptation Coordinator in RoA, the intern will:
- Work with the African Adaptation Knowledge Network (AAKNet) online knowledge portal (www.AAKNetorg)
- Condensing and editing information from existing documents for the website
- Researching existing information outside UNEP on adaptation case studies, best practices, lessons learnt, tools, methods and other publications, and upcoming adaptation events
- Identifying and linking with other relevant online adaptation knowledge sources
- Establishing an interactive forum to enable users to exchange information
- Compiling a database of regional and national adaptation experts
- Providing feedback and suggestions on the design and structure of the website, and possibly undertaking a user needs survey
- Editing and condensing the information to be posted on the website
- Researching and compiling EBA tools, methods and other information and publications for the website
- Operationalizing the intranet interface of the website, to allow internal sharing of information and experiences, and monitoring of project progress
- Compiling a database of EBA projects, lessons learnt and good practices

Education
Applicants must be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher); or if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.
Be computer literate in standard software applications;
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Studies in website design, Information Technology, computer science, computer engineering, or related fields in combination with relevant experience in environmental management or development activities desirable.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
Fluency in one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat, English or French, (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
