Job Objective
To provide leadership and strategic direction to the regional office and field-based staff in the AMREF in Southern Africa Regional Programme,
Management Responsibility
1. Provide leadership for country and regional programme and staff;
2. In charge of country and regional performance and programme growth;
3. Participating and member of AMREF senior management team (SMT) with responsibility for representing the regional programme on the SMT and for supporting collective SMT decisions back into the regional programme.
Description of Duties
- Represent AMREF in Southern Africa and be responsible for the management of host regional relations.
- Leadership for the dissemination of AMREF’s values, vision and mission at country and regional level.
- Lead, direct and mentor the regional programme and its staff in line with the corporate strategy
- Lead the expansion and marketing of the country programme to a regional programme for the Southern African region.
- Promote AMREF's organizational identity and capacity to all stakeholders and partners in Southern Africa Regions.
- Develop networks and partnerships with national/regional/international institutions working in Southern Africa and spearhead donor collaboration, fundraising and project development within the region.
- Together with the directorates at Headquarters, ensure that AMREF in Southern Africa implements policies, procedures, operational guidelines and standards within the AMREF framework.
- Ensure that the regional senior management team is effective and mutually supporting.
- Encourage collaboration with other Regional and Country Programmes with Technical Leads, and support participation of Southern Africa project staff in regional projects and other AMREF activities.
- Together with the monitoring and evaluation function at Headquarters, ensure that adequate monitoring, evaluation and accountability mechanisms and donor reporting are in place and are used effectively within AMREF in Southern Africa.
- Ensure that the knowledge gained from AMREF in Southern Africa projects is documented and shared with the other Country and Regional Programmes, Headquarters, and externally.
- Facilitate the effectiveness of the Southern Africa Board.
- Work with AMREF Headquarters and AMREF Offices in Europe and N. America to build awareness of the regional programme needs, of programme priorities and for project funding.
- Participate fully as a member of the AMREF SMT.
Accountability
- Supervision: Works independently under the authority of Director General and within strategy and policy guidelines.
- Decision Making: Has full responsibility of decisions at country and regional level.
- Responsibility over data or information: Has access to important and highly confidential regional data and information.
- Responsibility over assets: Overall responsibility for country and regional budget and assets
- Responsibility over Staff: All country and regional staff.
Professional Qualifications
Post-graduate qualification, preferably in Public Health or related field.
Relevant Experience
- A strong understanding of managing operations in the developing world, preferably within the health development sector
- Hands-on experience in implementing primary health care in support of district and participatory health care systems and familiarity of the health and development needs of disadvantaged people;
- Demonstrable network of contacts and high standing in his/her profession.
- Proven track-record of managing staff and building effective partnerships and strategic alliances.
- Proven experience in managing a major programme and/or institutional group.
Length of Experience
8 years overall experience, 3 of which are at a senior management level.

- Progressive experience of management with a proven track record as a senior manager and leader, including experience in developing and implementing strategic plans.

- Demonstrable programme development capability
- Is personally comfortable fundraising and has a proven record in raising substantial research/development funds.
- Experience in working in the non-governmental sector or in specialized research/development institutions.
- Excellent English language communications skills, both oral and written (e.g., proposal writing), including public speaking.
- Basic understanding of electronic communications and standard office computer software.
- Knowledge/familiarity with African and other international development organizations

- Ability to work and to perform under pressure.
- Willingness and ability to travel nationally and internationally.
