OVERALL DESCRIPTION
General Description of the Program
GOAL has been working in South Sudan since 1998. GOAL South Sudan currently has four programme sites: Twic County, Warrap; Agok, Abyei Administrative Area (AAA); Sobat and Maban, Upper Nile State; The current GOAL programmes focuses on four main sectors: Primary health care, Nutrition, Water, sanitation and hygiene promotion (WASH), women’s Adult literacy Education Programme (REFLECT) and sustainable livelihoods.
General Description of the Role
The Lab technologist will be responsible for doing laboratory tests in the health facilities in Batil refugee’s camp. The incumbent will be expected to ensure that all the recommended lab tests are done to the highest level of quality – this will be ensured through controlled lab specimen collection ensuring that lab collection techniques are aseptic and that universal precautions are followed to the latter. The lab technologist will endeavour to ensure that lab supplies are in supply all the time and that orders are placed in time to minimise as much as possible stock ruptures that could affect the running of the laboratory.
In coordination with the Lab supervisor, the Lab technologist will establish a Laboratory in Batil Refugee health centre within the initial days of its set up. This position requires that the incumbent is a self-starter and managed by the medical officer.
Key Duties
• Establish a laboratory at Batil refugees’ camp health centre.
• Do the laboratory tests including and not limited to: Stool analysis, urine analysis, Rapid diagnostic testing (RDT), blood film for malaria parasites, pregnancy test, syphilis test, strip test for detecting Vibrio Cholerae, Haemoglobin level and any other tests as required that the lab is equipped for.
• Maintain high levels of infection control within and around the laboratory through proper collection, handling, transportation and handling of specimens, aseptic techniques maintained, proper sharps handling and ensuring that all lab medical waste are disposed as per the waste disposal guidelines in place. Univesal precaution must be adhered to at all the time.
• Ensure the safety of the laboratory and that Lab personnel are wearing appropriate clothing.
• Work closely with other departments in relation to ANC profiling for reproductive health, specimen collection in case of suspected outbreaks within the refugees’ camp.
• Report appropriately on the daily/weekly progress – tests conducted in the laboratory.
Requirements (Person Specification)
• Diploma Holders in Medical Laboratory Sciences. A higher diploma an added advantage
• Previous experience in hands on experience in a busy health facility of health facility level and above.
• Fluent in spoken and written English
• IT literate
• The incumbent will be enthusiastic and willing to work long hours to meet the programme objectives
