Our Client is an NGO working in Gender Equality and Sexual and Reproductive Health in Malawi and Ghana.
Job Purpose
The Country Director will provide strong management in a hands-on, pro-active way, with particular focus on the management of the impact of the work and with a clear overview of financial procedures of the organisation. Based in Malawi and working closely with and reporting to the Executive Director in the UK, s/he will have overall responsibility for all aspects of programme management. This is a senior position that provides a highly motivated and committed person the opportunity to make a rewarding contribution towards reducing HIV risk in Malawi.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Leadership
To lead in the development and implementation of the Country Strategy so as to achieve the vision, mission and objectives of the organisation;
To pro-actively lead the development of exciting new areas of work that help to maximise impact;
Management
To assertively maintain and develop shared standards of excellence within the organisation;
To ensure that established policies and procedures on HR, administration, finance, and programmes are understood by staff, implemented and regularly reviewed;
To focus on quality in every area of the work by effectively managing performance systems, including targets, appraisal and performance related pay;
To ensure that impact is effectively monitored and measured to the highest standard in all programmes, and that new strategies are adopted to increase impact;
To ensure that robust organisational learning processes are in place which capitalise on lessons learned, are communicated effectively and develop the organisation’s potential;
To ensure that all programmes are properly staffed with the highest quality of staff to achieve maximum impact;
Finance
To ensure that there is a robust internal control environment, including sound policies and procedures that safeguard the assets of the organisation and funding partners and that improve the effectiveness and the efficiency of the organisation;
To evaluate and make any necessary changes to the cost base of the organisation with a view to ensuring the greatest impact and value for money;
To increase the overall income of the organisation by securing new funding of projects through in-country and external funding initiatives;
Strategic
To provide strategic direction, leadership and management to in-country staff, including Assistant Country Director, Finance Director and Project Officers;
To develop with the Executive Director new ways of packaging the organisational methodology through training, curriculum development and the media;
To represent the organisation to government, international agencies, funding and other partners, potential donors and other bodies including civil society networks, the media and the public;
Reporting
To provide regular reports to the Executive Director on all aspects of finance, programmes, administration, HR and funding; and
To ensure that there is a comprehensive reporting
Person Specification:
Essential
• Strong, inspiring, hands-on, energetic, collaborative management skills, with at least 3 years experience of working at a senior management level
• Proven management skills and experience of coaching and mentoring staff, and ability to address issues or difficulties in the management and implementation of projects
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
• Track record of giving effective priority to results, quality and measuring impact
• Experience of developing new strategies and approaches with colleagues, and ability to present these convincingly to donors
• Excellent negotiation skills, and experience of working in a cross cultural management context.
• Educated to Graduate or post-graduate level
• Good IT skills
• Possession of good financial and budgeting skills
Desirable
• Management experience in the NGO sector at a senior level;
• Knowledge of HIV related issues such as Gender, Sexuality and Human Rights
• Relevant masters level qualification in management/HIV/Human Rights/development or related subject
Salary: £40,000 per annum plus housing, medical insurance and annual leave
