Who we are
Oxfam GB has been working in Southern Sudan since 1983, with initial activities in emergency water supply and health services. Since 2008 Oxfam GB has a dedicated mobile emergency response team working in all the states of Southern Sudan, and is one of the key emergency WASH actors in the country. In support of this programme we are looking for an Emergency Public Health Advisor.
About the role
The Emergency Public Health Advisor will be responsible for ensuring emergency preparedness and response activities are in line with the minimum standards established by Oxfam GB and coherent to the Public Health policy for Southern Sudan. You will be responsible for the implementation and completion of WASH training and capacity building plans; provide on the job mentoring and training to the WASH team to ensure that all public health emergency responses are in line with required standards. You will ensure that the existing monitoring and evaluation tools are utilised and updated where necessary and that lessons learnt are integrated into future programming.
This is a senior management role with overall management oversight of the emergency Public Health team. You will manage extensive and diverse internal and external relationships, while maintaining strong linkages with other sectoral leads within the country programme, and with other organisations in country.
What we are looking for
The person will need to have a sound understanding of public health engineering in emergencies as well as public health promotion techniques, but at the same time s/he will also be required to have sound understanding and proven ability for capacity building. We are looking for that rare individual who can balance the strive for quality technical interventions whilst retaining the ability to quickly respond to the humanitarian situation and lead the emergency public health team in an appropriate response or scale up when required. We are looking for someone who has vision and imagination and who is able to inspire the team and partners to contribute to that vision for pro poor change as well as the practical streak and excellent networking and communication skill that are required to take the vision forward. To be successful, you must have extensive international experience in technical water, sanitation and hygiene work in emergencies, in addition to an in-depth understanding of humanitarian and development needs.
