Oxfam is a worldwide organisation that works with over 1,000 partners in more than 70 countries to overcome poverty and suffering. Oxfam GB in South Sudan seeks to provide positive solutions to alleviate poverty and suffering and has been operating programmes in South Sudan for more than 20 years. The Programme is currently implementing Public Health and Livelihoods in Upper Nile, Lakes and Western Equatoria states and an Emergency Preparedness and response Programme in all the states. We are looking for a Humanitarian Context Analysis & Safe Programming Mentor to build the capacity of the EP&R team.
About the role
South Sudan is chronically affected by multiple emergencies of different nature, ranging from natural disasters, to epidemics to conflict-related displacement. As the Emergency programme responds to different situations in any part of the country, hence often being new to the context in which they are operation, there is a crucial need for an in depth context analysis of the areas of operation.
The Humanitarian Context Analysis and Safe Programming Mentor will work with the team to train the field staff on context analysis and safe programming so to improve the understanding of the humanitarian situations in which the team works and improve the quality and appropriateness of the responses, ensuring safe programming is a key element in any emergency response. You will lead the ongoing team-wide responsibility for scanning the environment for any indication of a changing environment or circumstances, identifying these emerging trends, leading debate and analysis of such issues, and guiding the adaption of activities as required accordingly. You will lead and provide leadership, guidance and direction in emergency assessments and analysis, particularly doing the overall contextual analysis within which the team's technical aspects of analysis will be embedded.
What we are looking for
We are looking for someone who has vision and imagination and who is able to inspire the team to contribute to that vision for pro poor change as well as the practical streak and excellent networking and communication skill that are required to take the vision forward. This is a high profile and demanding role with tremendous scope for making change happen. To be successful, you must have extensive working experience of emergency response in acute contexts (including both conflict and natural disasters). You must have proven capacity for mentoring, facilitation, training, capacity building and coaching. You should be willing to work and travel at short notice and sometimes harsh and insecure conditions.
