Aquaculture Value Chain Scientist / Senior Scientist (Africa)

The WorldFish Center is an international, nonprofit, nongovernmental research organization dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger by improving fisheries and aquaculture. WorldFish is one of 15 members of the Consortium of International Agricultural Research Centers supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The CGIAR is a global partnership that unites organizations engaged in research for sustainable development with the funders of this work. The funders include developing and industrialized country governments, foundations, and international and regional organizations.

The WorldFish Center is committed to meeting two key development challenges. 1) improving the livelihoods of those who are especially poor and vulnerable in places where fisheries and aquaculture can make a difference and 2) achieving large scale, environmentally sustainable, increases in supply and access to fish at affordable prices for poor consumers in developing countries.

AQUACULTURE VALUE CHAIN SCIENTIST/SENIOR SCIENTIST (AFRICA)
The WorldFish Center is seeking an economist / agricultural economist or social scientist with skills and experience in field based research and analysis, comfortable working in rural Africa. The candidate should be committed to using research for development in a complex cooperative environment of research and development partners. WorldFish seeks diversity and gender balance in its staff. Women and citizens of developing countries are particularly urged to apply.

We are looking for a versatile economist or social scientist with comparable skills who can combine research on aquaculture value chains with higher-level quantitative and qualitative analysis of rural livelihoods, poverty, governance, climate change impacts and policy responses.


The overall purpose of the position is to make leading contributions to research work by the Center and its partners in Africa. The position will initially be based in Lusaka, Zambia, and will focus on ensuring science quality of our new principal research programs in the region: the CGIAR Research Programs (CRPs) on More Meat, Milk and Fish by and for the Poor (Uganda and Egypt, initially) and Aquatic Agriculture Systems (Zambia and Uganda). The position will also contribute to developing further research projects under these two programs in the region.

Key Responsibilities
* Provide science leadership in development of a research agenda around developing country aquaculture value chains, in support of our CRPs.
* Lead and contribute to collaborative research teams in on-going and emerging research projects in the region, and in particular take on lead research responsibilities for value chain aspects within these research undertakings;
* Help mobilize resources and design and implement collaborative projects on analysis of aquaculture value chains, improvement of value chain performance that also results in equitable benefits for all value chain actors, especially women and poor consumers, and monitor and evaluate intervention outcomes and impacts, in key program countries including Egypt, Uganda and Zambia;
* Develop strong partnerships in research and in development with National Agriculture Research and Extension systems, Advanced Research Institutes and with the private sector, NGOs and civil society.
* Develop scientific publications, technical reports and other knowledge outputs from projects and programs;
* As a member of a multi-disciplinary team of researchers, contribute to policy dialogue and broad dissemination of research results in the context of development processes in focus countries; and
* Supervise and mentor teams of junior researchers in WorldFish and partner institutions.

Skills and Abilities
* Proven record of scientific analysis and publications in international social science journals;
* Sound knowledge of current approaches and methodologies of value chains, as well as in gender, poverty, institutional and governance analysis, markets and aquaculture; and
* Excellent written and spoken English language capability.

Qualifications and Experiences
* PhD degree in economics or agricultural economics or a relevant social science discipline, such as, sociology;
* At least 5 years experience of field-based research on issues of value chains, rural livelihoods, gender, poverty, aquaculture or agriculture;
* Successful experience of proposal development and resource mobilization in the context of international agricultural research; and
* Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams in project contexts and under tight deadlines.
