The East African Health Research Commission (EAHRC) is an Institution of the East African Community (EAC) established by the 5th Extra-Ordinary Summit of the EAC Heads of State on 18th June 2007. The EAHRC has been established as a mechanism for making available to the community, advice upon all matters of health and health related research and findings necessary for knowledge generation, technological development, policy formulations, practices and related matters. The Commission is the principal advisory institution to the EAC on all matters related to health Research and Development (R&D).
The establishment of the East African Health Research Journal (EAHRJ) is in line with the protocol establishing the EAHRC in its mandate of promoting and facilitating the application of knowledge from research.
The EAHRJ aims, among others, strengthening national and regional health policy and practice, developing human resource capacities and skills, promoting exchange and dissemination of health research information, advocacy of evidences generated from health research; and accessing to research and scientific work from East Africa.

Job Purpose:
The consultant will copyedit manuscripts submitted to the East African Health Research Journal to prepare them for publication. The consultant will report to editor-in-chief of the journal.
Duties and Responsibilities:
i. Format manuscripts in Microsoft Word to ensure consistent styles are applied within and across articles
ii. Edit manuscripts to improve organization, readability, clarity, conciseness, and adherence to house style.
iii. Edit manuscript and related files for errors in spelling, punctuation, and syntax.
iv. Verify facts, dates, and statistics, using standard reference sources.
v. Check data referenced in the body of manuscripts against related tables and figures.
vi. Format references according to American Medical Association (AMA) reference style guidelines.
vii. Ensure in-text citations are in proper numerical order according to AMA guidelines.
viii. Edit tables and figures and format according to house style.
ix. Proofread articles after typesetting to ensure adherence to house style and appropriate layout, correct misspellings, resolve grammar and punctuation errors, and confirm URL links are active.
x. Collate internal and author corrections to articles after typesetting.
xi. Communicate with editors and authors to resolve questions.
xii. Adhere to deadlines to ensure timely and successful publication of each issue.
xiii. Interact with Editorial Manager Manuscript management system.

Qualifications and Experience:
Academic and professional qualifications:
- Masters or PhD in biology or medical field
- Masters or PhD in biology or medical field
Work experience:
- 5 years of experience editing journal articles or equivalent-style research papers.
- 5 years of experience editing journal articles or equivalent-style research papers.
Skills and Competencies:
- Native English speaker with thorough knowledge of the English language
- Familiarity with various style guides and manuals, particularly the AMA Manual of Style
- Familiarity with British spelling
- Ability to adhere to tight deadlines
- Experience with fact checking
- Concentration, accuracy, and great attention to detail
- Tact and diplomacy for negotiating changes with authors
- Self-motivation
