Job Title: Senior Communications Officer – External Communications
Reports to: Communications Manager
Location: Dar es Salaam, Sub-Office, Dar es Salaam
Purpose of the position:
The Senior Communications Officer – External Communications is mainly responsible to undertake the planning, development and delivery of World Vision external communications strategy. The incumbent will oversee implementation of the communications brand policy for external publics. Effective development of communications resources for external audiences, in the form of print publications and videos comprise one of the key roles. He/she will build capacity of key staff to improve effective communication within the organization. The incumbent is also responsible for promoting public visibility of the organization as well as building relations with media. This position will report to the Communications Manager.
The Senior External Communications Officer will work closely with:
- The NDs office
- The HR team
- Directors, Department Heads and Senior Managers
The incumbent will also observe the mission and core values of World Vision and demonstrate a quality of spiritual life that is an example to others.
Major Responsibilities:
1: Develop and maintain the external communication plan and budget.
Develop external communications products including media kit, WVT backgrounder, executive bios, Q&as and talking points to keep external stakeholders effectively informed and engaged
2: Work with World Vision specialists to develop quality print publications and materials and video, online-based products for effective donor and public engagement by WVT -both in-country and internationally
3: Produce consistently and timely quality feature stories and photos for sharing with World Vision Partnership-wide website, WVT website as well as SHARE for World Vision Marketing.
4: Take the lead in working and maintaining strategic media relationsto generate proactive and positive news coverage for important media opportunities and interviews that promote and protect the public image and ministry of WVT. Create opportunities for World Vision spokespeople to engage directly with the media, including interviews, speaking engagements and panels. Monitor WV and other development partner’s media coverage
5: Assist the Communications Manager to develop and enforce WVT’s external communications branding policy and procedures/guidelines to facilitate appropriate and effective flows of information and communication with external stakeholders outside the organization
6: Build capacity of key staff to strengthen effective communication of the mission and vision of World Vision to external audiences
7: Provide support in strategizing, managing, and coordinating national and global advocacy communications campaigns
Qualifications: Education/Knowledge/Technical Skills and Experience
The following may be acquired through a combination of formal or self-education, prior experience or on-the-job training:
- Minimum Qualification required: Advanced Diploma in journalism or communications/public relations.
- Experience: On job training
- Preferred Qualification: BA in journalism or communications/public relations.
Technical skills/Abilities
- English language fluency (written and verbal)
- Excellent writing skills, with photographic and/or video skills also preferred
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with all levels of staff and public
- High level of confidence and confidentiality
Other Competencies/Attributes:
- Must be a committed Christian, able to stand above denominational diversities.
- Perform other duties as required.
Working Environment / Conditions:
- Work environment: Office-based with frequent travel to the field
- Travel: 30% Local travel is required.
- On call: 10%
