AWF is seeking a program officer to work with different stakeholders and assist local communities living within the Mkoji Water Sub-Catchment Project area to implement AWF’s “Safeguarding Ecosystem Services and Promoting Sustainable Agriculture” in Tanzania’s to improve the livelihoods of the communities.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement participatory tools for mobilizing and organizing communities to effectively implement and sustain wildlife, forest and the upper water shed, activities such as sustainable agriculture, use of forest non timber products for income generation etc
- Establish good working relationship with local communities and their leaders including other stakeholders
- Assist communities in planning, prioritizing and implementing natural resources management activities
- Assist communities to communicate with other stakeholders such as local authorities and with other potential collaborators
- Assist communities to gain access to information, resources and opportunities that are likely to empower them to manage their natural resources more effectively
- Conduct awareness training and educational activities which assist communities to explore options for natural resource management and wildlife & forest business ventures in their area
- Work closely with the Enterprise Officer and Enterprise Program Manager in implementing business partnership with public and private sectors.
- Train and lead community forest and water conservation activities such as training of village forest and water management committees
- Provide community mobilization support to forestry programs in areas such as forest inventory
- Work with WMA CBO leaders in the implementation of land use & Resource Zonal Management Plan activities such as livestock grazing
Qualifications
- A university degree in Community Development or any other related field.MA in Community Development or CBNRM program is preferred.
- A minimum of 4 years working experience in community conservation.
- Familiarity with dynamic and key issues relating to community based forest and water conservation in Tanzania
- Understanding of factors constraining community based wildlife & forest enterprises; creativity on how to respond to these challenges.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of collaborators.
- Proven ability to write good project reports.
- Knowledge of local languages
- Willingness to work long hours when required, occasionally over weekends.
- Frequent field trip away from the station.
- Ability to appreciate diversity such as gender.
- Computer literacy- an ability to work efficiently in word, excel and internet skills
- Regular travel within the landscape
- Willingness to spend days out in the field including camping when necessary
