Assistant Solicitor General, Legislative Drafting

Location: Belize

The primary role of Assistant Solicitor General (Legislative Drafting) is to draft clear, unambiguous and relevant legislation, primary and secondary, consistent with Government policy and in accordance with the established Legislative Programme.
Scope of work:               
  • Research, analyze and draft both primary and secondary legislation pursuant to drafting instructions received.
  • Research and prepare opinions in relation to existing legislation or proposed legislation.
  • Supervise Crown Counsel (Legislative Drafting)
  • Represent the government at meetings of interest groups and consultative bodies, providing information and explanation of existing and proposed legislation.

​Required Experience and Qualifications

  • Qualifications as an Attorney-at-Law, Solicitor or Barrister
  • Diploma or Masters of Law in Legislative Drafting:
  • 7 years post graduate experience which should be in a legislative  drafting office.
  • Ability to work accurately under pressure to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to assimilate complex matters and facts quickly and work independently.
  • Ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate and monitor own work;
  • Excellent inter-personal skills, ability to work in a consultative and collaborative manner
  • Strong communication, writing and IT skills.
  • Appreciation of confidentiality and political sensitivity.
  • Sound judgement.
