The incumbent will be AMSHeR’s Policy and Law Programme Lead and his or her responsibilities will include –
a. Research and prepare reports and other materials to support AMSHeR policy advocacy initiatives
b. Support AMSHeR’s advocacy on sexual orientation and gender identity issues within sub-regional regional and international human rights mechanisms
c. Lead on the development of policy briefs on key issues pertaining to the protections of MSM and LGBTI individuals including the rights to equality, non-discrimination and access to the highest attainable standard of health
d. Support the capacity of MSM/LGBTI organisation to document human rights violations and provide direct technical support to these organisations on law, policy, human rights issues
e. Lead on AMSHeR’s initiatives to increase the engagement of national stakeholders including national human rights institutions, national AIDS councils, mainstream human rights and HIV organisations to better protect the rights of LGBTI individuals
Eligibility Criteria –
a. Strong commitment to social justice and human rights for all, including for LGBTI individuals
b. An undergraduate law degree. Experience practicing law in a Civil law, Common law or Roman-Dutch law jurisdiction. A postgraduate degree in human rights law is highly desirable.
c. Understanding of the African human rights frameworks and system
d. Understanding of the law, policy and human rights issues affecting the HIV response for MSM in Africa
e. Prior experience working on sexual rights, sexual orientation and gender identity is desirable
f. Proficiency in English, and French or Portuguese
g. Ability to work effectively as part of a dynamic team
