Grants Manager for a Climate Change programme

KPMG’s International Development Advisory Services Unit (IDAS) is based in Nairobi, Kenya and has adopted a pan-African approach to development work, employing full-time experienced development experts within the KPMG Africa team at our headquarters in Nairobi, together with a network of champions across the twenty countries of KPMG in sub-Saharan Africa.
KPMG seeks a Grants Manager for a Climate Change programme bid in Kenya. The three-year project with a possible extension of up to 12 months will support Kenya achieve sustainable growth through improved response to climate change risks and opportunities.
The Grants Manager will oversee all aspects of grant funding on the programme, including operationalising and managing the grants management team. S/He will be based at the programme management unit office located in Nairobi, Kenya.
Principal responsibilities include:
- Contributing to developing guidelines and assessment criteria for funding applications and proposals
- Contributing to identifying and commissioning grant recipients
- Conducting a Call for Proposals process from start to finish, including evaluating concept notes and proposals, identifying suitable recipients of innovation funds and ensuring that each undergoes a fiduciary and management assessment
- Liaising with grant recipient organizations on disbursement schedules and reporting requirements and preparing funding agreements for individual grantees
- Coordinating and overseeing the review and approval of grantees’ budgets (forecasting and spending), work-plans and accounting systems, with the help of a dedicated accounts staff member
- Retaining oversight of the grants budget and the Fund account, contributing as necessary to quarterly disbursement reports, accounts and cash forecasts, and contributing to ensuring compliance with financial management regulations
- Participating in procurement of goods and services as the needs arise
- Coordinate, as necessary, with partners implementing other components of the same programme
- Contribute to risk mitigation plans based on experience with grantees
- Contribute as necessary to a knowledge management system for partners and grantees
Qualifications
- At least five years’ experience managing grants on donor funded programmes, preferably for climate change activities
- A degree in an accounting related field (ACCA or equivalent qualification preferable)
- Familiarity with the climate change adaptation and mitigation issues in Kenya with networks within the government of Kenya, private sector and civil societies
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Working proficiency in Swahili will be considered an asset
- Experience working in the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) will be considered an asset
