EGG-energy Tanzania , Chief Executive Officer

EGG-energy is seeking an experienced, highly motivated executive to lead the company during an important scaling phase. The person will oversee a 20-person team and will be responsible for the overall performance and growth of the business. The position is based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, with significant domestic and some international travel. 

Job Responsibilities:

• Provide direction and leadership towards the achievement of the company’s philosophy, mission, strategy, and its annual goals and objectives
• Implement the strategic goals and objectives of the organization
• Improve and implement the organizational structure required to fulfill the responsibilities of the organization
• Establish and execute EGG-energy’s operational goals
• Lead the company’s capital raising strategy to ensure operational continuity
• Create and develop relationships with regulators and other government entities
• Provide direct oversight of COO and CTO; hold ultimate responsibility for the team in Tanzania (currently 19 members).
• Establish auditing mechanisms to ensure quality control of EGG-energy’s services
• Lead the execution of EGG-energy’s expansion in the Coastal Region and beyond
• Identify and launch new initiatives
• The role reports directly to the Board of Directors of EGG-energy

Once the right candidate joins the team (currently 20 members in Tanzania), the founding CEO will transition into a Chief Strategy and Business Development Officer role and will continue supporting strategy and operations and to represent the company externally as appropriate, jointly with the new leader.

Desired Skills & Experience

Job Requirements:

• 3-5 years of management experience in an organization (or business) serving low-income consumers in the developing world (preferably Sub-Saharan Africa or India).
• Minimum of five years in a leadership position with revenue responsibility as well as experience in strategy development and implementation, marketing, fundraising, and budgeting
• Specific operations experience in the scale-up of a service business, distribution networks (logistics), product maintenance (eg. elevator maintenance) or manufacturing management
• Several years of marketing experience
• Advanced degree preferred
• Previous customer-facing experience in retail or service industry, previous sales experience is a plus
• Business-minded
• Fluency in English; knowledge of Kiswahili preferred
• Must be available to travel up to 60% of the time
• Deep connections in energy and/or retail

Location:

The position will be located in Dar es Salaam, with extensive travel (up to 60% of the time) both throughout Tanzania and internationally.

Compensation:

Attractive compensation package: compensation based on experience plus equity allocation, base to be increased as company revenues grow; flights and housing stipend; medical benefits.

Company Description

EGG-energy (www.egg-energy.com) is a for-profit social venture dedicated to providing energy services to low-income customers in sub-Saharan Africa, starting with Tanzania.  The company’s mission is to improve customers’ quality of life by engineering solutions and building distribution networks that connect their homes and businesses to affordable and reliable energy services.  EGG-energy bridges the “last mile” power distribution gap by developing efficient and profitable supply chains for energy access.

EGG-energy currently offers solar rooftop installations and portable battery rentals to households and small enterprises. The company is technology-agnostic and focuses on distribution and service, typically saving customers 35-50% on annual energy expenditures. EGG-energy also performs electric system installations and sells basic appliances.

EGG-energy is a relatively flat organization that is open to change and welcomes ideas from all team members. The team is currently comprised of a CEO, COO, IT director, Director of Solar Programs, HR Manager, Membership Manager, Office Assistant, a four-person sales team, three site managers, three station managers, and five technicians. In addition, EGG regularly hosts 2-5 fellows for short and medium term missions.

  

EGG-energy has been funded by a combination of equity, grants, loans, and in-kind contributions and is in a strong position to drive the development of a new, sustainable energy infrastructure that serves Sub-Saharan Africa. The company recently secured an equity investment from GDF-Suez Rassembleurs d'Energies and is the winner of numerous business plan competitions and awards, including 1st place in the Social Enterprise track of Harvard Business School’s 2009 business plan competition and recognition as infoDev’s Top 50 SME in 2011. Founding CEO Jamie Yang was named Echoing Green Fellow and an Unreasonable Institute Fellow. EGG-energy has received grants from the Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund, USAID’s Development Innovation Ventures, and the National Geographic Society’s Energy Access program.
