Our vision is of a world where no one is blind from avoidable causes and where visually impaired people participate equally in society. Each year, we improve the lives of millions of people in the poorest parts of the world.
Programme Epidemiologist Flexible location, preferably at a Sightsavers office in Africa. Salary dependent on location.
In this crucial position, you will provide technical and scientific input to our research programmes and supported trachoma initiatives in Africa and Asia. You can expect considerable variety and visibility, as you advise country teams on survey design, monitor and evaluate activity and conduct operational investigations, whilst reacting rapidly to data from the field.
At the same time, you will actively develop and field test an integrated mapping tool and collaborate with the World Health Organisation in creating post-intervention surveillance systems. Naturally, much of your time will be spent preparing written and oral reports, posters and presentations, including scientific papers for peer-reviewed journals and specialist meetings. This will demand impressive communication and drafting skills, backed by the confidence to speak at a range of conferences.
Qualified to Master’s degree level or equivalent, in Epidemiology, Medical Statistics or Public Health, you will bring sound practical experience of epidemiological or health system research. In particular, you will be fully aware of research governance, quantitative and qualitative methods and statistical packages such as STATA and SPSS, and you should be familiar with writing for expert audiences. It is also desirable but not essential that the successful candidate can speak French or Portuguese as well as English. Finally, hands-on exposure in Africa or Asia would be a significant advantage, alongside willingness to spend around two months a year overseas.
