Organizational Setting |
The VIC (Vienna International Centre) Medical Service serves the staff of the VIC-based organizations (VBOs), including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) and the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV). The VIC Medical Service is administered and operated under the IAEA's Division of Human Resources. A fit workforce in an occupationally safe and healthy environment is required to carry out work effectively and the VIC Medical Service is essential in monitoring and promoting the health of the organizations' staff. The VIC Medical Service ensures that the UN Common System medical standards are maintained at the VIC, that the work environment satisfies ergonomic, as well as other requirements, and that it is reasonably free of health risks. The 18 medical and administrative staff of the VIC Medical Service render services to approximately 3800 staff, as well as dependants of the organizations served. |
Main purpose |
Reporting to the Medical Director, the Medical Officer provides advice, counselling and treatment (including emergency treatment) towards improving the health of individual staff members; advises management on the health aspects of employment to furthermore optimize the health of staff in general, and gives medical opinions in individual cases. |
Role |
The Medical Officer is a general specialist with expertise in several medical areas relevant to the VMS, such as, clinical medicine, occupational health, emergency medicine, travel and tropical medicine, radiation protection and medico-legal issues; and a promoter of a healthy and safe work environment. |
Partnerships |
In addition to being a service provider, the Medical Officer establishes credibility as a voice of credible medical advice to senior management. Additionally, she/he engages with his/her counterparts in other UN organizations on standards and practices. He/she also collaborates extensively with local medical institutions and doctors. |

Remuneration |
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $67 395 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $45 492*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance.
